The Examination of Robert Doughtie taken the xvjth daie of June 1642, Before mee Chancellour of his Maiesties Court of Exchequer By direction of the right honnorable the Lords Justices & Councell.
Who beeing sworne & Examined, saith, that about the midle of the Last Lent there came vnto Mr Robert Harpooles house of Shrowle one Captaine ffox, who was then tearmed Seriant Maior Gennerall of the fforces vnder Sir Phelim รด Neale. And this Examinant conceiues that the said ffox, together with the wife of Mr Harpoole & ffryer Geoghegan, were the parties, who moued & prevailed with the said Mr Robert Harpoole to goe into Rebellion And the said Mr Harpoole did att that present tyme begin to prepare himselfe with Armes, and had Pike heades made in his house. And after some ffiue or six daies abode of the said ffox att the said Mr Harpooles house, hee the said ffox departed thence and promised to returne vnto him againe and to bring with him a Thousand men to goe vnto the Seidge of Ballilinnon, where a brother of the said Harpooles (formerlie in Rebellion) was deteyned Prisoner, by Captaine Greames. Robert Harpoole wrote vnto Sir Morgan Cavanagh, & seuerall others of the Rebells for theire fforces. And accordinglie the said Sir Morgan Cavanagh with about twentie horse, one Ambrose Pluncket, Mr Wall of Roughlin, with about ffortie or ffiftie in his companie, mett att the said Mr Robert Harp{ooles} house from whence they went vnto Mr Thomas Ovingtons then high Sheriffe of the Queenes Countie, who ioyned with them and they altogether went vnto the Seidge of the said Greames att Ballilinnon, where likewise there were sundrie of the Brennons from Edough, who were drawne thither by the solicitation of the said Mr Harpoole But the said parties not beeing able to preuaile against the said Greames they robbed him of all his Cattle and soe raised the Seidge, and dispersed euery one to theire owne homes. But soone after the Lord Mountgarratt and sundrie others of the Rebells comeing towards Athie there to encounter the kinges Armie; the said Mr Harpoole, with his eldest Sonne, one Mr ffrancis Loftus brother vnto Sir Dudley Loftus John Ovington of Killeban, and three of the said Ovingtons brothers ioyned with the said Lord Mountgarratt, and was with him att the Battaile neare killrush, where the said Mr Harpoole lost three of his horsemen. called Edward Loftus, ioynes with the said Mr Harpoole in his rebellious courses and is very actiue therein And imployes his stock and monie in buying and provideing munition & other requisitts to further this rebellion, And likewise saith that since the defeate att Killrush the said Mr Harpoole and the said Mr Edward Loftus went vnto Wexford, where they mett with Hugh McPhelim now Leivtennant Gennerall vnder the Lord Mountgarratt. And att the said Towne of Wexford they the said Mr Robert Harpoole & Mr Loftus bought twentie pounds of powder which cost them ffiue poundes & ffoure Musketts or Calleivers. And att the same tyme the said parties deliuered vnto Hugh McPhelim tenn poundes more, which hee the said Hugh McPhelim promised to laie out for them in Powder. And this Examinant further saith that soone after hee the said Mr Robert Harpoole sent his servant (one Owen ffarrall) with ffortie poundes more vnto Gallwaie there to buy powder. Att which tyme there alsoe went from Peirce ffitzGerrald of Ballisonan, one Lawrance Goghegan, cheife or Guardian of the ffryers now att Castledermott with a hundred poundes to bee laid out att Gallway likewise for Powder. And after this Examinant parted

from the said Mr Harpooles house, hee this Examinant vnderstood by relation from annother that the said ffarrall servant to the said Mr Harpoole had brought from Gallwaie vnto his said Master two barrells of Powder: And further saith that hee this Examinant beeing servant to the said Mr Robert Harpoole for these three yeares last past was notwithstanding in much danger of his life, because hee would not alter his religion & goe to Masse & that the said Mr Harpooles second sonne Will{iam} Harpoole did often moue his ffather to hang him this Examinant. And this Examinant alsoe saith that the said William Harpoole is very feirce & cruell in killing of the English. And likewise saith that the said Goghegan Guardian to the said ffryers is a most busie man in setting forward the present Rebellion, & hath heard sundrie of the said Rebells affirme that they beleiued the said Geoghegan was priuie to the ffirst plotting of this present rebellion.
