The Examination of Allexander Gill of Lurgan in the County of Ardmagh Aged 46 yeares taken before vs the 20th day of May 1653
Who being dewly sworne and Examined saith that twice before the burning of the Towne of Lurgan by the Ireish at or about the first of Nouember 1641 One Neece McConwell <A> an Inhabitant, distant from the said Towne, about a mile and halfe, came the first time, three dayes before the said burning from the Irish partie then at Clanconnell to Sir William Brumlowe with a message, saiing to Sir William, that the Ireish were all vp, and that unless the towne and Castle were suddenly deliuered vp vnto the said partie, the would destroy the Inhabitants and people of both, with fire and sword as they had done at drommore and the like they would doe with those in Lurgan Towne and Castle
And saith that the uery day before the burning of the said towne of Lurgan, being on the Sabbath day, the said Neece mc Conwell, came to Sir William againe with the like messadge and expressions, and saying further, that hee did wonder at Sir William, and the rest of the said Towne, that they were soe simple, as not to yield vp all vnto the Ireish, and wisht them (in a scornefull Jeereing maner) all to bee packing away, And being demaunded, who hee this Deponet heard were the Cheife of the said partie, hee saith as the said Neece tould it them, they were Art og mc Glassny mc Ginnis, Edmond Booy mc Glassny mc Ginnis, and sundry others whom this deponet doth not now remember, And saith that notwithstanding, the Conditions were made by them, with Sir William Brumlowe, for the rendering vp of the Castle, that the persons and goods of all in <B> it, should bee safe, and at liberty, to goe away with all they had,
The said Maginisses with Toole mc mc Can, and Toole mc Rory mc Can, entering the Castle, presently fell to stripping and plundering of the people and goods in it. And saith that of the Rebells which plundered the Townes people, and deuideing the spoyle thereof, were Glassny Oge Maginis brother to the forenamed, Art oge mc Glassney Maginis and Patterick Duff mc Conwell, brother to the said Neece mc Conwell, and a great nomber of others of that Crewe, whom hee this deponet now remembers not. And more sayth not.
