The examination of Brian modder mc Quire of Ballirathfenten in the County of ffermannagh taken before vs Sir Sa: Mayart knight & Hugh Cressy esquire &c this 5 of Nou 1641

<V> Who beinge examined saith that he hath dwelt at Ballirathfenten a yeare last past & kepes ploughing ther & is tenant to Richard Nugent of Tullenegoran in the County of ffermannagh & that vpon Michaelmas day last he left his house & was not ther euer since but went first to the faire of Belfore in the County of ffermanagh to sell Tobacco wher he stayed one night & from thence he went to Clownis in the County of Monaghan with one Mathew Brenan who dwells at Blessingborne in the County of Tirone: wher they stayed one night & the next day this examinant left the said Brenan & came alone by himselfe to Tateboy in the County of Cauan to his moothers house called Margret Rely wher he stayed til the last munday was fortenight in al which time that he was with his said moother ther was no company <came> to the house but one Hue Rely who was a drouer & came that way with cowes to driue to the Nauan; & that vpon munday was fortnight he left his said moothers house & came in company with Hue Rely & no other in ther company to the house of Owen Boylan at Knockroe in the County of Cauan wher ther were some company but he knoweth none of them: & from thence vpon tuseday the said Hue & this examinant only came within 4 miles of the Nauan to Knockfadda wher they lay & wher ther was no company but the people of the house & from thence vpon Wedensday they 2 only came to the Nauan; wher he left the said <W> Hue Orely who went back to Aghowyerter in the County of ffermannagh [ ] wher he dwelleth & this examinant stayed al that wedensday at the Nauan & the next day he this examinant & Owen o Brislan & Donogh mc Brian & Brian Ocadan & one other yong man called Donogh mc Gilleroe came altogether til dublin they cam within 3 or 4 miles of the towne of Dublin; & then the said Owen o Brislan & Donogh mc Brian who droue a 11 Cowes before them of ther owne towards Dublin stayed ther but the name of the place he knoweth not wher they stayed nor did he euer see them since but they both dwel at Ballimccarry in the County of ffermannagh & do vse to buy tithes to liue by: & the said Brian Ocadan went before this examinant into Dublin & this examinant & the said Donogh mc Gilleroe followed him 2 houres after, & the cause why the said Brian went before was for that he was on horseback & this examinant & the the said Donogh on foote but they did neuer after meete in Dublin:
<X> This examinant being againe asked what night he came to Dublin saith it was this day fortnight beinge friday & that he lay at Killene with Donogh mc Gilroe only the night before being this se u night & that the other aforenamed persons went further with ther Cowes two miles on this side Killene & on friday morninge they mett & came within 3 or 4 miles to Dublin & then parted as aforesaid & this examinant & the said Donogh came into Dublin together & lay in Cookestreete but knoweth not the house but sekeinge for lodginge found it out: he further saith that he was neuer acquainted with the said Donogh nor euer saw him before he mett him at the Nauan nor knoweth for what cause he came to towne but said that the said Owen & Brian did owe him some mony & that this examinants busines was only to buy Tabacco & that he had only a 11 s. to buy it with but that Brian O Cadan wold haue taken it vp for him but that he cold not finde him: & that this Brian Ocaddan dwells within 2 miles of Eneskellen vpon the high way & came to Dublin to buy Tobacco; he also saith that he was not appoynted or aduised to come to towne by any person or was he to meete any there but came only to buy Tobacco but was taken vpon Saterday morninge in his lodginge.
