The Examinacion of Henry Smith Lieutenant unto Captaine Robert Caulfield taken before me Sir Richard Bolton knight Lord Chancellor of Ireland the 8th day of November 1641.
<E> Who beeing duly sworne & examined upon his oath saith that he heard that there were diuerse gentlemen drinking at Coopers Taverne in Oxmonton neere St Michans Church yesternight & that after their drinking they came into the streete and threw one that stood Centinell ouer the stocks & took one of them layde his hand [ ] upon [ ] his Muskett and tooke the match out of the Cocke & then that they went to the house of Mr Nicholas Darcy in Oxmonton whereupon there was a great uprore in the street which this Examinant hearing rose out of his bedde & gathered together some souldiers that he had pressed to be of the Company of Captaine Robert Caulfield & followed them to Mr <F> Darcy his Howse & this Examinant hauing with him the Captaine of the watch he required them to open the dore & demanded of Mr Darcy whether there were any such people in his Howse who answered that there were noe strangers in his house & thereupon Richard Birt of Tullogh looked out of the window & said I am the man that you looke for & had I knowne so much before I would haue burned all your arses before this time & this Examinant further saith that one Captaine Birt brother to the said Richard Birt <G> that came lately from beyond the seas is likewise in Mr Darcy his Howse with them & further saith that Mr Darcy he himself caused the dore to be opened to the Captaine of the watch who coming in Richard Birt came downe the staires & began to draw his sword at the said Captaine demanding what authority hee had to come into any house in that manner th and thereupon
