The Examination of Christopher Ashpoll taken the 2d day of June 1642 Before mee Chancellour of his Maiesties Court of Exchequer By directions of the right honnorable the Lordes Justices and Councell
Who beeing sworne and Examined saith that about the xxiiith of May last hee this Examinant beeing on the Topp of the Castle of the Deanes Grange there to wa lk e watch and discouer the comeing of any of the Rebells, thence saw after sunn setting of the same daie a man drawing neare vnto the said Castle with a Muskett in his hand And the good wife of the house with two others beeing then alsoe on the topp of the said Castle they called vpon the said partie who soe had the Muskett in his hand and then laie in the ditch prepearing as they supposed to shoote att one of them And therevpon the said partie told the woman of the house that she had then in her house an English Captaine whom hee would haue thence which the good wife denied and protested there was none in her house but one kinsman of her husbands who was noe Captaine nor Souldier And the said Rebell beeing knowne vnto one Murtagh Bredon who was then on the topp of the said Castle hee the said Bredon said this partie is such a one sometymes a servant vnto Mr Brackenburie wherevpon the good wife

said itt were fitter for him the said partie to follow his trade then to follow the Rebells Vnto which the said partie said, I haue cause to curse my Maister Brackenburie who sent mee with Powder vnto Welsh of Carrickmain for since that tyme I neuer durst shew my head
