The Examination of Richard Paget taken the xxixth day of Aprill 1642 before mee Chancelour of his Maiesties Court of Exchequer By direction of the right honnorable the Lordes Justices & Councell.
Who beeing sworne & Examined saith that on Tuesday last hee this Examinant & others were comeing into this Cyttie with ffoure waine Loades of wooll of the Earle of Castle havens, & that within lesse then halfe a Mile of Rathcoole & on this side of the said Towne they were sett vpon by two of Scurlock of Racredon his sonnes, with the Hetheringtons of Rathcoole to the number of about thirtie of ffortie persons there beeing aboue a hundred in all in the ffeildes thereabouts, who vpon theire comeing vnto this Examinant & his Companie kild in English man his wife and Childe one Irish man & besides hurt three other Englishmen, & compelled this Examinant and the rest to driue the said carriage after them vnto Kildrought & from thence vnto a Common towards Sir John Dungans house And the said Sir John as this Examinant vnderstood afterwardes haueing from the topp of his Castle seene the said carriage and prisoners soe comeing hee sent out one of his Servants to know what the matter was, & assoone as hee had notice that the said Goodes and parties belonged vnto the

Earle of Castlehaven hee the said Sir John & three or ffoure with him came out on horseback with his Pistoll cockt & told the said Rebells, that the said carriage & Prisoners hee would take & keepe for the said Earle of Castlehaven And accordinglie the said Sir John rateing & raileing on the said Rebells tooke the said Carriage & Prisoners vnto his owne house by which meanes this Examinant conceiues that the Goodes & the peoples liues were preserued But beeing demanded whether the said Sir John or anie of his companie did hurt or kill any of the said Rebells saith that neyther the said Sir John nor any of his Companie did kill or hurt anie of the said Rebells other then a sonne of the said Sir Johns stroke some of the said Rebells ouer the head & Shoulders with a halfe Pike or cudgell.
