The examinatione of John Lalis of Iristowne in the County of Dublin yeo: taken beefore Sir Robert Meredith Knight one of his Maiesties most honorable priuy Counsell, the last of October 1642
The said examinat being duly sworne vpone the holy euangelist and examined vpon his oath deposeth that on Thursday last beeing the 27 of this instant october one Mathew Brangan of Rowlogh in the County aforsaid in the eauening of the said day did send a letter which hee resceaued from one Walsh a titulary Captain amonggest the rebbells by the Cowe hearde of Rowlogh vnto Barnaby Costill, then beeing in Irishtowne in the parrish of Palmerstowne in the County aforsaid whoe was seriant vnto the provost martiall Burrows & had the Comand of the garrisson ther, vnder the said prouost martiall, which letter the said Barnaby Costill Resceaued and had the same read vnto hime the eauening aforsaid and, the said deponent farther saith that the said seriant when hee heard the letter aforsaid the contents ther of Beeing that the said Barnaby Costill shoulld repaier vnto the said procur as many of oure Army to goe along with hime with their Armes vnto the rebells as he could and the said titulary Captain Walsh woulld make the said Barnaby Cos Costill his lieutenant vpon the reading of which letter the said Barnaby Costill fro did swear many Bloody oathes that hee would haue the saide Mathew Brangan hangged for Bringing such a letter vnto hime from the Rebells, yeat not with standing, the said Barnaby Costill the seriant of the garrisson aforsaid repaired vnto Dublin the next morning beeing fryday the 28 of this instant October wher hee fownd the said Mathew Brangan, wher they spent most of the said day togeathers drinkinge & further the said examina t deposeth that the said seriant and the said Brangane departed from this Citty with diuers others, and about the eauening of the said friday, the said Barnaby Costill cam to the towne of Irishtowne aforsaid, and hauing to towe soulldiersurs in his Company hee was permitted to Com into the stone houss of Irishtowne aforsaid wher the garrisson did reside, and in a greate r adge hee ther towlld vnto the soullduirs that hee fownd in the garrisson, that the rebells wear neer vnto Pallmerstowne & inte d intended to take towe stakes of oats that Beelonged vnto Mr Vssher this examinats master and Comanded alle the soullduirs, that wear within in the garrisson to stand to their Armes and to bee in a readines for that hee woulld goe forth to rescue the said oats, vpon which words of the seriant the soullduirs stood to their Armes and in the a little whill the said seriant put one anne paier of boots & spurs hee Brought with hime from Dublin [ ] , and went wher the powder and bulletts wer and put the pouder one the Table and wisht the soulldiurs to fill their Bandeliers ther with which they did according they ther being within the garrisson ten in number or ther abouts, after which h ee & tooke the rest of the powder & Bullets with hime wher vpon the said seriant when hee was drest hee required went forth one the dors doers & desired the soullduirs to goe with hime to rescue the oats, but some of the soulldiurs mistrusting the said seriant when they found hime out of the doers they locked the door on hime, the seriant hauing fiue of the soulldiurs without dooers in his company, & the said examinat further deposeth that within towe howrs after night falle, the centry perceaued a great many of the rebells to com from the towne of the Roulogh

and as this examinat is credibly informed they wear parte of them Captain Skurlogh Company and parte of them Captain Walsh his company with whome the said Barnaby Costill Joyned with fiue soulldiurs of his owne garrison & from further sayth that about tenn of the clok on friday night last past the said Rebells togeather with the said Seriant Burned his Masters Barne great Barne it beeing full of wheat and likwiss put fier vnto all the Ricks of Corne that was in his Masters haggard (one little stak of oats only excepted and a great [stable?] that was in the said towne, & further deposeth that all th the Corne in the said Barne & haggard was all Consumed by the fier except a little stake of oats and three Barrells of wheat which was thraisshed in the said Barne, which corne beeing distroied as aforsaid this examinat verily beeleeueth that his Master might have made fower hundred pounds ster: therof if hee had been suffred for to have inioyed it, & this examinat further deposeth that one the next Satturday morninge, one Connor tressy whoe was one of the soulldiurs of the garrison of Irish towne that went in Company with the said seriant the night beefor, Came Bak again vnto the garrissone, & related vnto the garrison soulldiurs that remained in the garrissone when hee perceaued the wicked plot of the said seriant hee hid him self in a dich, and further related that the said seriant brought with hime in his company frome Dublin thirteen or fowrteen of the soullduirs that wear in garrison ther, with their muskets & Bandeliers whoe went along with the said seriant the said examinat further deposeth that when the said seriant went forth amonggest the rest of his asosiats & perceauing that the soulldiurs woulld not goe alle of them with hime amonggest the rebbells, hee the said seriant and the rest of the rebells shott seuerall volies of shott at the windoers of the stonne housse, and Called them a Company of parlament rouges & towlld them that they did not know for whom they did fight, and threatned the rest of the soulldiars, & Company that wear within in the houss that if they had not gon alonge with hime that hee woulld Burne the houss about them & have kill woulld kill them all, but they that wear within in the houss did resist their entrance for that night his the examina ts Causs of knowledg is for that hee was in the stone houss of Irishtowne alle the said friday at night & hath liued ther all this harvest ower seeing the gathering of his Masters Corne
