The Examination of Anthony Pile sometyme a Trooper vnder the comaund of Captaine Chambers one of the Warders of Cloghgrennon taken the xxixth day of June 1643 Before mee Sir Robert Meredith knight Chancellor of his Maiesties Court of Exchequer & one of his Maiesties Justcies of the Peace for the Countie of Dublin.
<d> Who beeing sworne & Examined saith that hee this Examinant beeing taken Prisoner about Shrouetide last past by the Rebells & conveyed by them vnto the Cittie of Kilkenny hee was there kept in Goale vntill about a ffortnight last past hee this Examinant was lease released vpon an Exchange for one of the Rebells remayneing likewise a tt Prisoner att <e> Cloghgrenan And this Examinant further saith that dureing his said imprisonment att Kilkenny One Edward Wilson an Englishman & Brother in law vnto Collonell Cullen repaired vnto him this Examinant & acquainted him that sundry tymes & almost weekely there came intelligence from Dublin of all the passages & proceedeings there And saith that the said Wilson shewed vnto him this Examinant the <f> persons who brought the said intelligences which intelligences were for the most part directed vnto Sir Richard Barnwall Barronet who continuallie

<g> resides att Kilkenny And is imployed there for one of the Provinciall Councell And the said Wilson further acquainted him this Examinant that the said intelligences were conveyed from one Alderman Arthur of Dublin And the letters likewise sent from Kilkenny directed to be deliuered vnto him the said Arthur & likewise saith that the Messengers who conveyed the said letters betweene those of <h> Kilkenny & theire partie in the Cittie of Dublin for the most part receiued & deliuered the said letters at Temple oge And this Examinant further saith that the said Wilson desired him this Examinant to make itt knowne vnto the Lordes Justices & Councell that the Rebells had a Plott for the takeing of the Cittie of Dublin which this Examinant conceiues had beene Executed ere this If the treatie of Cessation had not for the present <i> diuerted the same which Plott was as followeth The Generall Preston, att what tyme the kinges Army should bee abroad in some part of the Country, should draw a good Army of the Rebells through the Countie of Wickloe & with them repaire vnto the Cittie where vpon the issueing forth of such <k> strength as were in the Cittie against him the said Preston as itt was presumed would bee done The Popish inhabitantes thereof the said Cittie of Dublin (whereof there was a list made & sent vnto Kilkenny)

<l> should presently possesse themselues of all the Gates of the Cittie & endeauor the fireing the Suburbes & killing of as many of the other partie as they could & soe to receiue in to the Citty the said Gennerall Preston with his fforces & Exclude the English forces out of the same And this Examinant saith that the said Wilson gaue him this Examinant charge to giue <m> giue advise that all the ffire Reekes should bee remoued from endangering the said Subvrbes And the said Wilson alsoe desired him this Examinant that hee would repaire vnto Colonell Cullen and call vnto him for a Letter whereby hee the said Wilson should bee directed what to doe in the said Collonells buisenes att Kilkenny The same beeing committed in trust to him the said Wilson <n> vpon the receipt of which Letter (which and as a marke betweene the said Wilson & him this Examinant was to haue there beeing a Romane A drawn att the bottome of the said letter) hee the said Wilson would without further delaie repaire vnto this Cittie himselfe & then reveale and discouer all the principall parties of the Cittie of Dublin interested in the said Plott And this <o> Examinant further saith that if a partie of his Maiesties fforces were sent into the Countie of Kilkenny to make spoile thereof the Cittie of Kilkenny would soone bee giuen vpp as hee conceiues The said Cyttie beeing to his this Examinantes knowledge fedd from hand to mouth & noe provision of store therein nor any Guarde

<p> considerable to keept there when Preston goes into any other part of the Kingdome And lastly this Examinant saith that since the said Prestons beeing att Ballinekill hee hath kept together three thousand men, 1000 whereof hee had from Sir James Dillon 1000, out of Mounster vnder the Command of Castle Connell & another 1000 of the fforces of the Country which is all the said Prestons strength besides what Hugh mc Phelim hath vnder his commaund in the Countie of Wickloe. and such other fforces as ly in Wardes and Castles held by certaine gentlemen of the Country
