The examinacion of James Carroll aged 18 yeares taken before me the 2d of January 1641
<J> Whoe sayth that he was a souldier that went voluntary vnder the comande of Captaine Newcomen to Drogheda alonge with Sir Henry Titchburne his Regiment, and was inrowled in the list of the kings Army and received pay, And sayth that vppon Monday last beinge St Johns day he this examinate wth a doozen more souldiers went forth of Towne to bringe in ffirrs for the army, And that he this examinate togeather with one Dennis Brenan & William Brien stole away carryinoe, noe other Armes but theyre swords And that at Dunleeke theire swords were taken from them by Callogh McBrien and his souldiers, And that since theire cominge to this Towne Dennis Brenan is gone to <K> Kilcocke and William ô Brien is gone to Captaine James Longe sonn to Longe of Abbotstowne, And saith that the newes at Drogheda was at his cominge away that Twelue thousand Scotts were Landed in the North and that Sir Philem ô Neale was taken prisoner and that the Scotts had a skirmish with the Irish and killed agreate many of them And sayth that the reason he came away was meerely by the perswasions of his followers they thinkinge it <L> to longe before they had reliefe from Dublin And further sayth not save onely that vppon St Thomas day last the enemies assaulted the walls of the Towne thinkinge to vndermine them with Cross and Pickaxes but were beaten of with the Loss of one hundred men
