The Examinacion of Gyles Brome of Dublin soldier of the age of lxx v yeres or theraboutes taken the xiiijth daye of Septem: 1652 taken before vs Sir Gerrard Lowther knight Sir Edward Bolton knight and Thomas Dongan Esquire Comissioners for Administracions of Justice Oyer & Terminer and Gaole delivery &c and William Basill Esquire Attorney Generall for the Comonwealth and one of the Justices of Peace for the Province of Leinster as followeth
Whoe beinge sworne and Examined saith that about All Hallantyde next after the begininge of this Cruell Rebellion <A> this Examinante and manie other Englishe beinge in the howse or Castle of Knockrath in the County of Wickloe belongeinge to Joab ward Esquire and he and those in the Castle standinge vpon their defence against the Rebells Colonell Luke Birne and Colonell Luke Toole of Castlekevyin Teige mc Donnell Birne of in the County of Dublin and Donnell oge Birne twoe of the sonns of Hugh mc Donnell mc Hugh Duff Birne with manie other Rebells and Irish near fower or five hundred in number came to Surprise the saide Castle and further saith that after som treaty, the said Colonell Luke Birne and Colonell Luke Toole beinge Cheefe in Comand, gave quarter vnto the said Joabe ward and to the rest of the English and Protestants that were in the said Castle and saith that about a forthnight after the said Teig mc Donell and Donnell oge Birne with manie others <B> of the Irish came againe to the said Castle, and demanded three of those that were in the said Castle by name Edward Sneape, Thomas Huntpatch and one Richard a Carpenter by trade, and soe tooke awaye the saide three persons last named, and saith that when the saide three last named three men beinge Englishe men were carryed awaye they expressed greate feare and sorrow and saide to those that stayd in the Castle well frends wee shall never see yow more for

<C> for wee feare theis Rebells will take awaye our lives for somm ould quarrells that have beene betweene vs and somm of the sonns of the saide Luke Toole, And this Examinant further saith that he and the English in the Castle shortly heard and were Crediblely informed that the said three Englishe men soe taken awaye from <D> from the said Castle were afterwards murdered by the said Rebells And further deposeth not.
