John Hathway late of Beally parish of Kilmalash barony of Decies and within the County of Waterford yeoman (a brittish protestant) duely sworne & examined before vs by vertue of a Comission beareing date the 5th day of March last to vs & others directed touching the losses and sufferings of the Engl ish and protestants in the Province of Munster besides many other particulars to be Inquired after touching the discouery of this presente rebellion deposeth and saith That on or aboute Christmas last this deponent & diuers English & protestants to the number of thirty persons betooke themselues for their safeguard to Dromany Castle in the said County at which time this deponent obserued that Edward fitz Butler of Clare in the County of Tipperary gentleman accompanyed with nyne other gentlemen whose names he knoweth not came to Dromany & at night after supper there past a certaine Comunication betweene the said parties & Gerrald fitz Gerrald of Dromany aforesaid Esquire to this effecte The said Gerrald demanding them a question being all papists whether they could say the [ ] ten Comandements they answered yea: howe then comes it to passe quoth he that yow worshipp graven Images they answered that that Comandement was none of the ten but added by protestant ministers, they further vrged the said fitz Gerrald to turne to masse & then he answered he would neuer doe soe while he had life to breath, This deponent heard them tell the said fitz Gerrald in plaine termes that what the Irish army did in banishing & stripping the English was by vertue of his Maiesties Comission & further he saith n o t
