The Examination of James Freny taken befor vs the xvijth of August 1652
<A> The examinant saith that att the beginning of the Rebellion he lyved att Kilgreny in the County of Catherlogh & that he lyved it is 30ty years befor & ha th since he first came thither continued till the same was cutt of by the lyne
Being demaunded whither he did know Richard Laike he saith he did & that the said Laeke lyved att Laughlyn & was by profession a fisher; and that he did know one called Samuell the hatter who lyved likwise att Laughlyn, & one Peter a shepheard vnder Mr Ambrose Plunkett who lived att Ballilarsney wher the said Mr Plunkett sheep were kept & depastured with some others, who were att Laughlyn, & from thence they were to be convoyed from towne to towne till they came to the county of Wexford, & that ther was diuers soldiers vnder the comaund of Collonell Bagnall who was then gouernor therof, appointed for the said convoy which said party for the convoy was comaunded by Teig o Mathelyne then serieant to the company garrisond att Laughlyn; and that he first saw & mett with the said Company & convoy when they came to Kilgreny wher he lyved: & seing the said <B> company & convoy passing by the towne, he asked the said serieant whither they were going, he who answered that they wear to be convoyd from towne to towne unto they came to the County of Waxford; Being demaunded how farr he went with the said company so convoyd he saith to Balliclantumock which was about half a myle from Kilgreny: & from thence retorned back to his owne howse: Being demaunded what became of the said company after he parted with them he saith that he heard that they were carried between Ross & Duncannon & that theyr they were murthered but by whom he knoweth not:
Being demaunded what became of Richard Laike he saith that he was hanged vpon the land of Kilcante betwixt Laughlin & the towne wher this examinant lived, but by what or whose orders he knoweth not vnles it was by orders from the Constable or comaunder of the ffort, being demaunded who was then constable or [comaunder] of the <D> ffort, he saith Charles Dempsie, who was putt in by Collonell Bagnall, when he & Sir Morgan Kavanogh was gover{nor} of the County of Catherlogh: and deneith that he did { } Charles Dempsie that day:
He saith he remembreth not that he was that day with Cha{rles Dempsie} att Knockmill neither doth he remember any paper { } deliuered by Dempsie to teige Maulyn, neither doth h{e} { } was the contents therof, nor was present att the exe{cution} { } neither did he goe along with that { } denieth that he sent for 2 [ ] { } to his howse att th at tyme wh{ } by his meanes [ ] { } att Kilcrute { }

<E> being demaunded what persons now lyving in Laughlyn was present or doth know who convoyd that English & in company with him whe he went alonge with the Convoy from Kilgreny to [Balliclantemagh] , he saith John Carren, James Kinsalagh & Nicholas Roth who he saith can giue further informacion of the rest that were with him: who went with the Convoy, & were imployed therin for that they then dwelt in Laughlyn & farther saith not.
