The Examination of Elizabeth Rooth of Laughlin in the County of Catherlagh taken at Kilkenny 21 Octob 1652
The Examinant aged thirty fiue yeeres or neere thereabouts being duely sworne and Examined saith, That shee now liueth at Laughlin bridge, That at the begining of the Rebellion shee liued at BallyneBoly within a quarter of a myle of Laughlin aforesayd Being demanded whether shee knew Isaac Woolly she saith shee knew him, Being also demanded whether shee knew Nicholas Pue his seruant, shee saith shee knew none of the seruants of the said Isaac, but only one mayd seruant, Being demanded whether shee know of any English executed at Laughlin since the Rebellion; and where shee saith shee knowes there was one an Englishman hanged on the other side of the water, in a new house not then finished belonging to her this Examinant, but what his name or Condition was who was so Executed, shee knoweth no{t} And that shee this Examinant did then forbi{d} those that were to hang the said person Engl{ishman}

him in her house & sayding if they did shee would not liue in it; And further saith That when the said Englishman person was carryed forth to Execucion there was by the same party carryed forth with him out of the Castle of Laughlin one Comyn formerly a seruant to Major Hermons mother, and that the English man was Executed but the said Comyn was after That brought back to the Castle. And that shee the Examinant did at that time see Teige mc Thomas Maudlin a serjeant present at the sad Execucion. And that notwithstanding her labouring to hinder them as aforesayd they forthwith proceeded <in> the said Execucion as aforesayd Being demanded who then Comanded in Laughlin shee saith <B> There was one Captaine Baath Baath who then Comanded there, But that shee did not see him that day of the Execucion, but heard he was there, And further saith That this Execucion was in the same yeere in which the Battell at Rosse was fought, but the precise time

39precise time shee remembreth not, And that the said Baath was there appointed Governor of Laughlin by Generall <C> Preston about the time of the sayd Battell of Rosse, Shee saith That shee now knowes James Boy o Carravan, but doth not remember shee did see him at the time of the Execucion, shee further saith That shee knoweth Col Walter Bagnall, but knoweth not that he was the in Laughlin at that time. Being demanded whence the said Englishman person so hanged was brought and whether from Clogh Gronane or not, shee saith shee knoweth not, Being also demanded who did hang the said Englishman person shee saith shee knoweth not. And further saith That That shee heard that the person so Executed was a seruant of Isaac Woollys but whether and Englishman or Irishman shee knoweth not. And further saith not.
