The Examinacion of Sir Edward Butler knight taken befor vs the 18th day of August 1652
The examinant aged 66 years or therabouts being duly sworne & examined saith, that about the first of May 1642 ther came a company of James Butler of Tinihinich his servants armed with others into the towne of Graige in the County of Kilkeny to search (as this examinant) was informed for his tenants then inhabiting in the said towne being all english men & woemen and then & ther seised vpon the bodies of <A> John Stone, his wife & sonne & his John his servant Walter Sherlow, with others whose names he remembreth not, which they carried out of the towne, & hanged some of them vpon the lands of Tinihinich nere Graige, whose corps was brought back to be buried in Graige & the rest were carried further & hanged mslayne by Gibbon fforestall Garratt fforestall Donogh o Dogheden now in Conaght whither he went with his Mr James Butler O Donogh o bane of neaham with others whose names he remembreth not and saith that he is confident that James Butler was then at home in his howse, & that Collonell Bag & that he doth not certaynly know whither Collonell Bagnalls wife, was then ther or not, but saith that shee did frequent that place & contenue ther sometymes 2 months or longer therabouts
He further saith that soone after he heard that Morrish Kelly with others brought diuers <B English> prisoners from Gowran to Graige, amongst whom was Henry White tenant to this examinant, att which tyme ther was Collonell Eddmond Butler, Sir Walter Butler, Captain Shortall, & Captain Peirs Butler this examinants sonne and this examinant hearing that the prisoners was so carried away he sent his servant Andrew Barbor to vse his outmost endeavor to saue Henry White by reason he was his tenant, who soe prevayled with Collonell Edmond Butler then comannding in cheif that he gott of the said White, and the rest as he heard was convoyd to Ross & nere to that place putt to death as he was informed; and that the said Morrish Kelly did convoy them from Gowran to Graige & from thence to the gates of Ross: & saith that he sent both his said servant & a preist to mediat to saue the liues of the rest
<C> Being demanded what personall estate John Stone did was possessed of att the tyme of his death, he saith he knoweth not of any considerable estate, but saith that the said Stone was indebted vnto him in the some of 30 li. or therabout for arrere of Rent, and the said Stone having 2 stacks of Corne left, he this examinant after his death caused the same to be seised vpon, & gaue order to his servant to sell the same for the best advantage, & the same (as he remembreth) was sold for 14 li.
<He> further saith that after William Stone was apprehended & seised vpon & brought from his worke to Tinihinich to be hanged, he heard that Henry Bennett of Ross came purposely to Tinihinich to endeavo{r} to saue him
Being demanded what he knoweth concerning the death of Richard Lake he saith that he heard that he was hanged & further saith not
