The Examination of Sarah Frances alias Bolger taken at Kilkenny the 16th of October 1652
This Examinant aged six and thirty yeeres or thereaboutes duely sworne and Examined saith That she lived at the Graige at the beginning <A> of the Rebellion and two or three continued there fiue or six yeeres after That shee is daughter of Barnaby Bolger of the Graige and was formerly marryed to Walter Shirley of the Graige who by his Trade was a Carver and a Joyner, That he did worke with James Butler of Tynnehench neere the Graige and made vp a Gate for his house at Tynnehench That there liued then at the Graige of English, John Stone Robert Pyne, Joseph Valentine William Stone, one John a seruant of the said John Stone, Zachary Pyne a child of about a yeare and halfe old, Joseph Valentin{e} marryed to the Examinants sister Katherin{e} Bolger and Walter Shirley the Examinant{es} former husband aforemenconed, Margaret Stone wife of John Stone, Margarett their daughter then wife to Thomas White of Goran Barbara Pyne the wife of Robert Pyne and others whom she <A> remembreth not. That Walter Bagnall Esquire now called Col Bagnall was being at Tynnehench about the beginning of May 1642 where was also his wife and Col Edmund Butler

Butler was there also, And that Col Bagnall <B> did desire the Examinantes then husband Walter Shirley did then make some pistoll and Carbine stocks promising for Col Bagnall & others he being promised therevpon to giue him a Proteccion to liue quietly in the Country And the said Shirley having finished his worke and brought it home, receiued from the said Bagenall fifteen shillings for his worke and a proteccion vnder the said Bagenalls hand for his quiet living in the Country But before her said husband could recover the bridge of Graig in the way to his house he was followed by one of Tinihinch to deliuer the passe he had so receiued which he refusing to doe & he as brought back to Tynnehench house where it was taken from him but by whom this Examinant remembreth not
That the same day James Butler of Tynnehench and the said Col Edmund Butler went from <C> Tynnehench on horseback, that shee this Examinant did see them going but did not know that Col Bagnall was with them That the [ ] same night about Midnight, one Dermot o Doghenon and Knoghere more seruants of James Butler aforesaid, knocked at this Examinantes house, and shee opening the doore they entred and tooke away her husband and the Examinant going forth with him found all the rest of the English taken out of their

of their houses and Th carryed ouer the <D> bridge of the Graige to the land of Tynnehench by James Butler of Tynnehenchs followers That this Examinant fearing some mischeife towards her husband went to Ballyogan to her land lord Sir Edward Butler liuing there about a myle from the Graige, to desire his Assistance for preserving her husband
That returning with a paper signed by the said Sir Edward Butler those persons in whose hands her husband was, hanged him seeing her coming with a paper hanged him forthwith so as he was hanged dead and Cutt downe before shee could come to him though making hast towards him, That of those who were there present about a litle way from thence, they did also hang Joseph Valentine aforesaid this Examinantes brother in law his wife the Examinantes sister being then present who came along with this Examinant from Ballyogan as aforesaid and overtooke her husband before he was hanged, Being demanded who of the Irish were

<E> Irish were present at the said Execucions and driving away the English she saith that shee saw there Garret Cody Gibbon Forestall and about Tenn more whose names shee knowes not shee further saith That John the seruant of John Stone before menconed, was also hanged on the same tree that her said husband was hanged and at the same time, and that John Stone and the rest of the English were carryed towards Rosse and by the way murthered. She further saith That the same day towards evening William Stone the sonne of John Stone working at the Roer on a ship for Sir Charles Coote, was brought to the Graige and on the same tree on the land of Tynnehench on which her husband was hanged, he was also hanged, And that one Bennett of Rosse came riding thither post to saue him if he could but could not prevayle by reason of Mrs Ellen Butler who then lived in the house of James Butler of <F> Tynnehench aforesaid and opposed his saving. That this Examinant did that day see him the said Bennet on horseback bare headed & that she was told by others that he had neither Cloake band or hatt on; through hast to saue the said William Stone, she further saith
