The Examinacion of Phillipp Brady of Rathcoffye in the Countye of Killdare Gent taken this 7th day of July 1654 before
The said Phillipp aged forty one yeares or thereabout being duly sworne and Examined saieth that about ffebruary last hee the deponent being authorised and Intrusted by Warrant from the high Courte of Justice then sitting at Dublin to apprehend seuerall persons in the said warrant mencioned as accused for seuerall murthers by them Committed and to that purpose goinge through the Countye of Meath did at a place or Towne called Cookestowne neare Kells in the said Countye of Meath meete with Connor Magwire and Melagt Cottier and Melaughlin o ffenegan Weaver both livinge in Cookestowne aforesaid whoe (vpon discourse betwene this deponent and them the said Connor and Melaghlin) <A> related vnto this deponent that Cochonnaugh o Gowen then a Dweller and now Prisoner in the Gaole of Trym at the Begininge of the Rebellion presently after diverse

of the English partye that were marching to Drogheda were Cutt of at or neare the Bridge of Gillianstowne the said <B> Cochonnaught came from thence to the parish of Lewye in the Countye of Cavan and there at a meetinge of the Countye People there after Masse did in the hearinge of the said Connor & M e l a ughlin in a Bragging manner reporte that hee the said Cochonnaught had then Lately byn at the said Slaughter of the said English partye and then shewed a Long Skeane which hee saied hee had made of a sword which was taken from some of the said English partye And drawinge the said Skeane saide that hee had therewith killed an ould English Calliogh whome hee mett by the way as hee came from the said Slaughter sayinge the said ould English Callioh was Cryinge for the death of some of the said English <C> and therefore hee killed her and that hee gave her such a Blowe on the head with the said Skeane, that hee could hardly gett the Skeane out of her head. Wherevppon this deponent Calling to mynde that hee this deponent (Living at the begininge of the Rebellion at in the Countye of Cavan)

had himselfe seuerall tymes heard the said <D> Cochonnaght boast and bragg of the said Murther And therefore this deponent shortly after hee left talking with the said Connor and and Melaughlin went to Trym and Caused the said Coconnaght to bee apprehended and putt in prison for the said Murther And gave notice to Major Standly at Trym that the said Connor and Melaghlin could give Evidence against him and desired the said Major to send for them and Examined them whoe promised to doe soe And this deponent further saieth that the hee hath heard heard the said Connor & Melaghlin were sent for and Examined and the night before <E> they were Examined as this deponent heard they were at the house of the said Cochonnaght And this deponent further saieth that ffarrell Bradye of Martrye neare Kells and nowe or late prisoner in Trym tould this deponent that hee can give the like Evidence against the said Cochonnaght and that he Can alsoe give Evidence against one Teige o Daly nowe or late Prisoner in Trym as Comitted for the Murther of three English soldiers neare Kells. And further saieth not
