The examinacion of Grany Magan alias ffynn of Trym widdowe aged thirty two yeares or therabouts taken the th first day of June 1653 before John Gay Esquire and Thomas Dancer Esquire twoe of the Comittee of examinacions for the Counties of East Meath and Westmeath concerning Murthers and Massacres.
The sayd examinant being duely sworn and examined deposeth That she did well knowe Edmund Dalton of Lalestowne in the County of Westmeath Esquire, her Mother being Nurse vnto the sayd Edmund, And this examinant sayth that <A> about ten yeares of the last Michaelmas, one Hugh o Carbery whoe was present when the sayd Edmond Dalton was then taken taken prisoner, by James Magawly of Raduffe in the County of Me Westmeath gent and Oliver Magawly of the same in the same County gent, the sayd Hugh gave present notice therof vnto the sayd Edmonds friends and Kinsmen, desiring them to goe and rescue him out of the hands of the sayd Magawleys, wherevpon divers of his friends, amongest whom the examinant and her Moth{er} went to seeke the sayd Edmond, and found his bo{dy} buried in the Place where the sayd Magawleys h{ad} hanged him he being but newly deade his bodie being { } warme, and sweating And this examinant further sayth, that one Richard Magan one of the sayd Magawleys sould{iers} <B> whoe was alsoe present when they murdred the s{ayd} Edmond Dalton, told this examinant that the sayd Edmond proffred the sayd Magawlies his estate in the sayd County of Westmeath being of goo{d} value

if they would but save his lyfe vntill he might sent to the Guarrison at Athlone to the lo: <C> President there for vndertaking to pay a Ransome for him, or at least that they would but give him a smale space of tyme to make his Peace with God, which they vtterly refused to doe, But offred him if he would alter his religion and turne from being a Protestant and becomme a papist as they were, that then they would save his Life, and that he should enioy his land and estate; vnto which the sayd Mr Dalton made answere that he would not turn from his religion, for all the treasure and Wealth that the King of Spayne had, And there vpon presently the sayd James and Oliver Magawly <D> Caused him to be hanged in a bush vntill he was deade, as the sayd souldier whoe was present at his execucion tould this examinant, whoe accordingly (with many others in her Company) found dead him newly dead in his grave vpon a sunday morning, his body beinge warme And this examinant further sayth that it is well knowen to all the Inhabitants of the County of Westmeath that the sayd Edmund was murdred and put to death by the sayd Magawlies in manner as is before declared And this examinant further deposeth not
