The Examinacion of James mcGerrald ffarrell of Coollevore in the County of Longford gent aged fforty yeares or thereabouts taken before Coll Tho. Herbert Tho. Richardson & Robert Doiley Esquires Members of the high Court of Justice now sitting at Dublyn
who saith That about Alhontide 1641 the Castle of Longford was beseiged by <A> Cormac mcRoss o fferrall ffaghna mcfergus fferrall Murrogh mcEdmond fferrall Rory mcGerralt fferrall Lisagh mcGerralt fferroll & Roger Nagle & Richard mcConnell ffarroll being Captaines for the Irish. He also saith that after the said Castle was beseiged about a moneth Itt was yeilded vp. Being demanded if hee was at the seige or present at the deliuery of the Castle. hee saith hee was not at the seige nor at the yeilding vp of the sayd Castle. but saith that hee came that day (that the Castle was yeilded vp & that the English went out of the sayd place) vnto one Bartholmew Nangles house being near vnto the bridge end in the towne of Longford being demanded what tyme of the day hee came thither Hee this Examinant saith hee came thither about eleauen or twelue of the clock in the day tyme. Being demanded what his busines was in the towne vpon that remakable day hee saith that hee came that day with one John large from his owne house at Coollivore being fiue miles from Longford to see if hee could gett some of his Cowes restored, which were formerly taken from him by some of one Donnell boy mc laghlyn o fferrall. but found him not there. Being demanded what Comand hee had at that tyme. hee saith hee had no Comand vntill <B> hee receaud a Comission in August following from Sir James Dillon

then a Collonell in the Irish party to raise a foote Company. being demanded if hee did see the English passe out of the Castle the day they were massacred hee saith hee did not see them, but could see a multitude of people togeather vpon the green betwixt the Castle and the church. hee himselfe being then vpon the Causey and Near vnto Bartholmew Nagles house, less then musquet shott from the place where the English were then murdring. but denyeth that hee past over the bridge that day or that hee was in the Castle that day the Murther was done, or in six months afore or after. being demanded if hee were in Capt Roger Nagles company that day hee saith hee was not. but confesseth that hee did speak with Cormack mc Rosse (the Comander in cheife) at his quarter in Bartholmew Nagles house aforesaid and told him there was never the like breach of faith not to performe Quarter according to Agreement. which hee sayd was not his fault but some vntoward fellowes amongst them. Being demanded if hee this Examinant did see the persons that were then kild or heard them cry. hee saith hee did not see any of those English people so murderd. but could did heare the Cry at the tyme of the Execution. being demanded what were the names of those murderd people. hee saith hee heard that their Names were Tho Trafford a minister. one Martin & others being demanded if hee had did not see one Donnogh a sergeant of his there that day. hee saith hee did not. being also demanded if hee did see Or heare that Capt Roger Nagle was in towne that day hee saith <C> hee did not see him but heard that Nagle was in the Castle that tyme. hee further denyeth that hee had 2 hatts vpon his head that day. or that hee profferd any thinge that day for Aquavitae or that hee did at any tyme plunder the house of mr Nagle the minister. or oversaw any of his plunder. and further saith not.
