The Examinacion of Richard Shortall of Eniscorthy gent aged fortie yeares or thereabouts, taken vpon oath on the behalfe of the Comonwealth, Concerning Edward Chichester of Prospect in the barrony of Goary and County of wexford esquire
The Examinant being duely sworne & examined, touching the demeanor and actings of the said Edward since the Rebellyon saith and deposeth, That he well knew, and had Intimate acquaintance with the said Edward Chichester, which said Edward did in the first breaking forth of the said Rebellyon remooue himselfe to Dublin for safeguard of his life, where and in <s> other partes of the english quarters the said Edward, did Reside, till the Ld of Ormondes taking vpon him the gouerment of the Nacion for and in the Irish behalfe after his returne from france, the said Edward came to and dwelt vpon his said estate at Prospect and off was Reputed, & had the title and Comand of Leiut Collonell vnder the Ld of Ormondes Comand in the Regiment of the Ld Chichester, his the said Edwardes brother, In which Capacity the said Edward Continued, acting against the Parlyaments Interest till the Lord generall Cromwells accesse to Ireland The deponents cause of knowledge is for that the deponent was frequently with the said Edward after his Return to his estate as aforesaid, & by the said Edwardes Relacion was certifyed that he the said Edward was had the Comand of Lt Collonell in the Regiment aforesaid And further saith that after the Ld generall Cromwells accesse to the County of wexford or very suddenly before, the said Edward had a Comission from the Ld of Ormond (which Comission hee did shew to this deponent which hee the deponent did read accordingly) by which the said Edward was Impowered to Rayse a troop of horse for the seruice of the said Ld of Ormond

& the Armie vnder his Comand, [ ] wherein the said Edward did not proceed being hindered or obstructed there from Rather, by the said Lord generall Cromwells his excellencyes accesse as aforesaid then for want of his the said Edwardes off want of affection to the said Ld of Ormond, whose interrest the said Edward exceedingly was denoted vnto or pretended, in carrying on the Ld of Ormondes designes against the Parlyament of the Comonwealth <t> of England, ag against which the said Edward seemed to haue an avertion: And the deponent further saith that he verily beleiues the said Edward was in Armes with the Lord of Ormond, & the Armie vnder his [ ] Comand at his beseiging of Dublin, in that the whole forces of Ireland generally were drawne thither, and further saith not.
