The Examinacion of major Edward Aston of K{ } in the County of Waterford esquire aged about thirty foure yeares or thereabouts taken vpon oath on the behalfe of the Comonwealth Concerning William Sutton of Ballikegrogemore in the County of wexford esquire decd
Vpon the whole Matter of the Interrogatoryes the examinant deposeth & saith that he hauing in or about December in the yeare 1641: with thirty men in Armes vnder his Comand, taken the castle of Tinterne in the County of Wexford for defending thereof (against the Irish then Rising & rissen in Armes,) fore the vse of the english, & the proprietor thereof the Lady Colclough a protestant, Continued in the said Castle till about May July after the rebellyon brake forth <c> At which time the said william Sutton, & diuers others of the best ranke in the said County of Wexford came in Armes & layd seige to the said Castle and sumoned the deponent, to yeild the same, which he denied to doe, till after some dayes seige, finding noe hopes to be releiued, by the forte of Duncannon the only guarrisson then in the County of Wexford did surrender the same, on condicion that he & his men might goe securely into Munster england which was granted, & the Deponent further saith that the said william Sutton was one of the men, that was giuen & that of him selfe offerred to be One of the hostages for this deponents safe & peaceable conduct to ffetherd the place where he was to take shipping, which the said william performed: And the deponent saith that about May before that time, in the said first yeare 1642 the deponent being orderred by the Lord Esmond, to accompany the a party of the english out of the forte) with the Number of twenty foure men out of this deponents guarrisson to beate vp the Irish quarters, then at shelbeggan, within three miles to the said forte, & distant three miles of the deponents guarrisson, to which shelbeggan the english party out of the said forte, vnder the Comand of

Capt: Thomas Aston the deponents father, & one Capt Weldon came At which time & place the deponent & the english party were encountred & fought by the Irish & especially by Edward Sutton son & heyre apparant to the said William Sutton, who with about one hundred men vnder his Comand did with soe much violence fight & pursue the said english party that by his the said Edwardes Company & the rest Consisting of about six hundred all in Armes, that the said english party being Inuironed <d> on all sides did with losse of many one, & the extreame hazard of all their liues, through that difficulty Recouer to the forte whether the said Edward & his party pursued them & with more eagernes & feircenes then any of the Rest In which fight or skirmish there was killed one of the english souldyers [ ] , besides many that were deadly wounded & further cannot depose
