The examinacion of Richard Shortall of Eniscort{hy} gent aged fortie yeares or thereabouts taken vpon oath on the behalfe of the Comonwealth Concerning Cahire mc Phelim Cauanagh of Knockbrandan, in the barronie of Goary & County of Wexford gent
<To the 1st Inter> The deponent saith that he well knew the said Cahire, and that the said Cahyre dwelt at Knockbrandan in the barrony & County aforesaid in the Irish quarters the first yeare & the residue of the rebellyon, and from thence did <l> not remooue th into the english quarters, as the english & protestants (whereof there dwelt many in that Barrony) did: His Cause of knowledge is for that for the deponent dwelt about threed miles distant from the said Cahires habitacion during the rebellyon.
<To the 2d inter> Hee Cannot depose
<To the 3d & 4th Interr> The Deponent saith that the said Cahire did actually Contribute his person Armes and did act and abet the said Rebellyo{n} & the robberyes therein, Comitted vpon the english and protestants the said first yeare of the rebellyon: The deponents cause of knowledge is for that the deponent about December 1641: Comeing from Carnow towardes <m> his owne habitacion in the said Barrony of Goary did se{e} a great Number of Cowes, consisting of two hundred and twenty or thereabouts of the goods of Sir Walsingha{m} Cooke knight & his protestants Neighbours driuen away by the said Cahire & others in Armes in his Companie by what power the deponent knoweth not except it was what he [ ] the said Cahyre & his confederates did vsurp to themselues and further saith not onely that the said Cahire had foure sonnes, who were all souldyers for the Iris{h} [ ] & the eldest of them was at Carnow when the english were beseiged therein in the first beginning of the rebellyon where the eldest sonne of the said Cahire whose Name he remembers not was killed by a shot made from the english out of the said castle, The Deponents cause of knowledge is for that the deponent was sent by the Lady Esmond, during that sei{ge} to endeauor to preserue the lifes of seauerall of her englis{h} seruants, that were kept therein, in case the same wer{e} taken by storme, At which time & place the deponent did se{e}

the said Cahires foure eldest sonnes in Armes & eldest of them who was there killed in manner aforesaid, And that the said Cahires suruiuing sons had after their actings aforesaid in the rebellion releife & Countenance from their father during his life. and further saith not &c.
