The examinacion of Richard Shortall of Eniscorthy gent aged about fortie yeares or thereabouts taken vpon oath on the behalfe of the Comonwealth Concerning John Doyle of the Rocke gent who hath interest in Balliteig & Balligullin in the barrony of Goary & County of Wexford gent vpon the Interrogatoryes annexed to the Comission of enquiry
<To the 1st Inter> The deponent saith that the said John Doyle dwelt at Rocke in the Lordship of Arklo e being in the County of wickloe in the Irish quarters the first yeare & the whole time of the rebellyon from whence hee did not remoove into the english quarters as Robert vallentyne, Robert Broadshaw, George Covy George <t> Casson & other english & protestants that were tennants to the Lord Esmond in and about Limericke and Arkloe did remooue the deponents cause of knowledge ensueth in the following deposicion.
<To the 2d Inter> Hee Cannot depose
<To the 3d & 4th Inter> The deponent saith that the said John did in the first yeare of the rebellyon about December 1641: actually contribute his person his seruants, and others in Ar armes to the Number of seaventie men or there abouts, by him raysed & formed in Nature of a Company wherewith the said John did act, abet, and promote, the <u> said Rebellyon against the english & protestants and did in the prosecucion of his affection towardes the aduancing the [ ] Rebellyon Lead and draw the said men by him raysed to beseige the Castle of Arkloe then kept and guarrissoned by one Anthonydrew Poulton and about foure files of englishmen sent thither in order to defend & secure the same against the Irish <by the Lord Esmond> And that the said John by his Continuall seige and pretending a property in & vnto the said Castle of <w> Arkloe & the demeanes thereof, did reduce the said Castle to the his owne obedience having expulsed the said Poulton & the english thereout The deponents Cause of knowledge is for that the deponent being

Imployed by the Lord Esmonds lady to collect the rents reserued out of the Lordship of Arkloe did repayre to the said Castle of Arkloe to demand the accruing proffits thereof vpon Ashwensday first after the rebellyon brake forth to which castle the deponent was not onely denyed entrance, but had seauerall shots made against him out of the said Castle by the said John Doyle and the people therein vnder his Comand (whereof hee the said John shewed & declared himselfe to be gouernor to this deponent & denyed to giue this deponent any rent <x> or to permitt him to receiue any proffit out of any of the other demeanes thereof: which said Poulton and the english with him with their Armes went to Dublin Duncannon according certaine condicions made between him and the said John Doyle vpon his surrender of the said Castle in manner aforesaid and further saith that the said John Doyle Continued in the actuall possession of the said Castle as gouernor thereof till the same was taken [ ] by Hugh mc Phelim Byrne of the County of wickloe about a yeare after the said Johns vsurping thereof and further saith not.
