The examinacion of Dauid Devereux of Knockhowling in the County of Wexford gent aged about fiftie & two yeares taken vpon oath on the behalfe of the Comonwealth Concerning Nicholas Stafford of Ballimakeharne in the said County esquire vpon the Interrogatoryes annexed to the Comission of enquiry
<To the 1st Interr> The examinant deposeth and saith that he well knew the said Nicholas Stafford for theese twenty yeares past & knoweth that the said Nicholas Liued at <t> Ballimakeharne in the County of Wexford in the Irish quarters the first yeare & the whole time of the rebellyon and did not thence remooue into the english quarters as Mr Nicholas Codd Mr Waller & other protestants Liuing neere him did
<To the 2d Inter> Hee Cannot depose
<To the 3d inter> The examinant deposeth and saith that the said Nicholas did in the first yeare of the rebellyon (by vertue of a Comission to him directed from the Lords <u> Justices & Councell at Dublin) did rayse and Leuy a party of men in this County of wexford & was intended to Imploy them in the english behalfe but finding the gent of the countrey averse to his proceeding the said Nichas did in the deponents presence & audience auerre that he would giue direcons & Comand to one walter Row his seruant or some other to go vp to Dublin to procure a supersedeas to this Comission granted him thence as aforesaid the deponents cause of knowledge is that he did Liue neere the said Nicholas & was his tennant & did read the said Comission from Dublin & was familiar & frequently Conuersant with the said Nichas & soe became acquainted with his actings & the deponent saith that he beleiues the said Nicholas did paie his proporcion of publicque taxes layed on the Countrey for maintenance of the Irish forces as this deponent Liuing & others liuing in the parish & Countrey did, as well the first yeare as since

<To the 5th Inter> The deponent saith that he hath seen the said Nicholas at the Crosse of Killinnicke in the barrony of forth & County aforesaid at seauerall publicque meetings of the Irish when they assembled togeather for laying <x> of cesses & ordering other affayres for carrying on the warrre which the deponent conceiueth to be in or shortly after the first yeare of the rebellyon
<To the 6th Inter To the 7th & 8th Interr> Hee cannot depose
<To the 9th Interr> Hee deposeth & saith that the said Nicholas Stafford was & acted as a member of the County Councell as this deponent credibly heard from [ ] his neighbours & partelie <y> vnderstood being by his owne knowledge, being that the deponent Liued neere to & was frequent with the said Nichas being the deponents landlord; And further saith that the said Nicholas was high sherriffe in the said county of wexford in the time of the Irish gouerment in the yeare of His cause of knowledge is for that he hath seen seauerall warrants signed by the said Nicholas as in the name of high sherriff one of which warrants are extant in the deponents handes
<To the 10th inter> Hee deposeth nothing onely that the said Nichas had A brother of whose by name Jesper Stafford of <z> whose actings the deponent knoweth nothing, & that the said Nicholas had another brother by name Melcher Stafford who was a preist & was executed by Collonell Cooke
<To the 11th Inter> Hee deposeth that one Walter Stafford a protestant minister, & Edmond Burdeaux an englishman & the said <a> Nicholas Codd & Adam Waller Liued neere him the said Nicholas Stafford who after the rebellyon brake forth remooued themselues into wales or England

<To the 12th inter> The deponent saith that the said Nicholas Stafford did take and receiue two barrells of barley of the goods of Nicholas Codd of Castletowne then fled into wales which was in the first yeare of <b> the warre The deponents cause of Knowledge is for that the said Nicholas Staffordes seruants came to the deponent to borrow garrans to bring home the said Two barrells of barley.
