The Examination of John Hackett now Maior of Cashell taken this 24th of August 1652
this Examinant Sworn & examined Saith that he aged fifty three yeares or theyr abouts saith that he was an inhabitant in Cashell and theyr present when the rebles entred the Citty of Cashell aforesayd being one <A> new yeares Eue in that the yeare 1641, & that the Chefe Commander of that Irish Party was one Phillip ô Dwyer a Coll: & with him there entred into the towne afore sayd Tege oge ô Magher, Donagh ô Dwyer brother to the sayd Phillip, Thomas purscell of brother to the barron of Lokemay Phillip mc Gragh of Blean in the Ormond in the County of Tipperary, Phillip mc Thomas ô Dwyer of Mourton, Phillip mc Tege Rion of Lissenselly, Thomas Ro Ryon of Clonoulty, Hugh mc Sheane Rion of Clonoulty, James William Roch of ballygrifeth & the 3 sonnes of Daniell mc moghhunagh ô Dwyer of Crosalle & James bourke of Scarte, & many others whom this Deponent knoweth not, all which began the same day to plunder, strip the English of the said Citty & Casteng of them into prison, & the netx day being Newyears day in the morning by breake of the Day they began to Murther & wond the said English Killing out right sixtenn men & on woman, videlicet as Ralph Carr & William beane John Lindsy Richard Lane, Thom Thomas Charlton, Thomas Browne a Cooper, William Merifelld alias Cap[ ] Koge Karog & his wife William beans Hosler, whose name he remembr <B> etc not & further saith that William James Roch of bally Grifeth was a prinsipall & the three sonnes

<C> of Daniell mc Maghhunagh ô Dwyer of Crossalle, <Hugh mc Shane Ryan Bryan Kearney> Thomas Ro Ryon of Clonovlty & Hugh mc Sheane Ryan of Clonovlty aforesad, Bryan Carrny of TehKnockin thwho were the Chefe ackters of the Murther of Protistants aforesayd, & further saith that Edmond mc William ô Dwyer of Killgorman Knockgormand Ownhy mc william & Thomas mc william ô Dwyer of the same, & John mc william ô Dwyer of Cnockgorman was then Keeper of the magasene & John ô Dwyer of <D> Gurtoneske Phillip mc Cragh of blene in ormond in the County of tipperary, Tege oge ô Magher Donogh ô Dwyer aforsad Thomas Pursell aforesad Phillip mc Thomas ô Dwyer of ballimony Phillip mc Tege Ryon of Lissencelly James Bourke aforesad were the Chefe Plun derers & further saith that william James Roch aforesad bragd that he had revenged the deth of his wife by Killing of two English with his one hands, Phillip mc Shane being slaine by [ ] Capt Peaslys troope the sonne of the sad <C> phillip mc Shane made his brags that he had revenged the deth of his father for that hee had Killed twise so many of the English in Cashell & that he had Killd thomas Charlton by name for that he the sayd thomas Charlton was one of the trope being vnder the Comand of Capt Peasly aforesad & that he hard that the said <Charlton> was he which Killed his father & further saith not.
