The Examinacion of Ellice Meagher alias Jeanes of Cashell in the Co: of Tiperary taken at Clonmell August 3. 1652
This Examinant sworne & examined saith That she is aged 33 yeares, & now the wife of Thomas Jeanes of Captain Perrys troope in the Lo: Generall Cromwells regiment that she was formerly maried to Peter Palfrey of Cashell, & after the death of her said husband Palfry that she did nurse a child to Robert Browne of Cashell in the yea yeare 1641. That at the later end of December 1641 vzt on the 3rd day of that moneth Philip ô Dwyer of Dunedrom in the Co: of Tiperary entred Cashell about eight of the clock in the morneing with <A> a greate number of Irish in armes, among whom as the principall were Collonell Donogh ô Dwyer the said phillips brother Theobald Butler of Killoskean, Richard Butler of Ballinekill, [ ] Thomas Purcell of Gortanny, Vlick Bourke of [ ] Lislourni{ } Charles o Dwyer of CulleInure, Darby mc Knogher ni Mongy o Dwyer Philip mc Tege Ryan of Lysinselly, Hugh Ryan of Ballinagatagh, Hugh mc Shane Ryan of Cluonolty, William ô dwyer of Cross[aile], Peice Boyton the <Anthony ô Kenedy> sonne of Alexander Boyton of Cashell Anhony [ ] ô Kenedy of Cashell, John o Dwyer of Gortnystenghy & others whom at present she remembreth not: That being entred the towne they plundered all the English & protestants in the said towne: that about breake of the next day the first of January they fell upon Killing & wounding of the English & protestants aforesaid, [ ] of whom were murthered mr John Beane Inkeeper with his brewer, & Tapster (whose names she remembreth not) mr Ralph Carre Scholemaster about 80 yeares old, Thomas Carleton (commonly called Thomas Sadler) Richard Lane, & his two daughters, John Lyndsy, mr John Banister minister, one who was a Tyler, & his wife (greate with child) John a glaziers sonne about 11 yeares of age, Peter Murdo his child about 7 yeares of age, Margets Sn An John Anderson, & another old man about 80 yeares, & six more whose names the examinant now remembreth not, but she sawe them the lye deade: That she the Examinant had 11 wounds, & many others men women & children were then & there wounded. That of the murders murtherers at that time <B> Philip Engelish, Richard o Molowny of Captain Patrick Boytons company, William Codowny, <symbol> John ô Herick, Thomas o Gohorah, Richard Fleming, & William Fleming, James Minoge & others all we re after Killed or otherwise are since deade whose names she remembreth they being of the towne of Cashell, as for others who also acted in those robberys & cruelties she remembreth them not by name they being strangers to her, & that she Knoweth not who it was that wounded her this Examinant, That about betweene thirty & forty women & children more they striped quite naked & kept together { } guard vnder the upper gate about 3 or foure howres, & after opening the {g}ate being opened they were sent out in frost & snowe naked, who betooke themselfes to Moyldrom two miles from Cashell where they were entertained by James { }all of Moyldrom aforesaid vntill about ten dayes or a fortnight after they were {s}ent for to be returned to Cashell by Orders from Collonell Philip o Dwyer aforesaid {th}en Governor of Cashell by whom they were committed to prison: that the rebells at Cashell {st}ripped those poore creatures of what clothes they had gotten at Moyldrom aforesaid

aforesaid or otherwise, & plucked of what plaisters were layd to the theire wounds lest they should be cured. That the women & children aforesaid were that while the said women & children were at Moyldrom as aforsaid, all the <D> English & protestants were cast into a dungeon in Cashell being in water to the Knees. That all of them after, were sent away by a convoy towards Clonmell, which convoy was commaunded by Patrick Boyton captain, & Pierce Boyton (now of Cashell) his Lievetenant; that three of the said protestants were by the said Convoy killed, of [whom] John o Herick of Captain Boytons company aforesaid then & there Killed the said glaziers sonne. That two men [ ] followed that Convoy [ ] comeing purposely to Kill Edward Bankes one of the said protestants, whom they wounded, but he was rescued by Richard Conway of Cashell who went with that Convoy. That she this Examinant did se the said John o Herick long after in the said company said Boytons c{omp}any & that neither of the said Boytons <E> did hinder the said persons of theire Company who kil l d from killing the English on the way as aforesaid. This Examinant farther saith that George Wise one named George an Englishman was murthered on the way betweene Ardmaile & Cashell but by whom this Examinant knoweth not. And farther deposeth not.
