The Examinacion of Donnough Oge Carthy of BallymcOwen taken the 11th of September 1652
Sayeth That the day or the next day after kilbrittaine Castell was taken by the English, he remembreth McCarthy Reagh was at rendesvouze with a great assembly of the Country at killavarriggie hill, where newes was brought of the surrender of the said Castell to the English at which McCarthy seemed to be very highly displeased: And this Examinant further sayeth: he well remembreth that he sawe that day at the foresaid rendesvauze Mc NeCrimine come with his hatt in his hand to McCarthy Reagh, And heard him aske McCarthy what he should doe with John Burrowes and his wife & them: to which McCarthy replyed doe with them what you will, or putt them to the devill; And this Examinantt further sayeth that he heard it generally reported that amongst the people that Burrowes & his wife was a little distant from McCarthy Reagh when McInycryminie propounded the foresaid Question: And that he the said Burrowe s &c. they were taken from that place, & carryed to the wood of killycoursie belonging to the foresaid McInycrymine, And there were hangd (himselfe his wife & his sonne John), that afternoone. And this Examinantt being furthest Asked whither there was any Councell of Officers held about the Condemnacion of the foresaid Burrowes: he answered possitiuely that there was none, And further sayeth that McCarthy when the officers came to aske McCarthy how they should dispose of their men that night: he bad them goe in the devills name whither they would for he had lost all he had & would never goe further with them: And being further demanded, whither he heard that day any thing laid to the Charge of Burrowes for sendeing any intelligence to the English he answered possitiuely he never heard any such thinge that day: But further sayeth that about halfe a yeare after (to his best remembrance)
