The Examinacion of William Sergeant Aged 50 yeares 10o of Sept 1652
<Sworne> saith that he Liued at Downowen Castle in the first beginning of the Rebellion, and about the 12o of March he this Examinant with 16 others (men, & women), were sent downean from the Castle by Mr Barhaim, to fetch some Corne vpon their backs, for their releefe in the said Castle! (for the enemy had a litle before taken away all the Cattle & horses) & this Examinant saith that the Irish men about 80: or 100 under Captain Ino ôg Barry Laid an Ambush and surprised them, and promised them quarter for their Liues! for the enemy & they Contended, ere they were taken, & some were wounded, among whom <A> was this Examinat! About 2 houres after he was taken Captain Barry came to them and said he would hang this Examinant the next morning & send his head to his Master for a Breakefast, about 5 or 6 daies after they were taken! this Examinant saith Nicholas Berriman that was taken with him & had quarter promised him, was hangd close by Teige ô Heas Castle; and after 15 weekes imprisonment this Examinant with the rest were exchanged. <B> And this Examinant saith there was Tho: Clarke an an e nglishman in the proteccion & keeping of Captain John Barry, whom this Examinant saith he heard was hang’d in Captain Hungerfords Chimney, And this Examinant saith that he remembreth that Teige ô Direhy, & Thomas mc Donogh ô Hea, Daniell mc Teige Murroughee, David Barry & Cormc o Daly, & John ô Wolleheane, there which some of them that tooke this Examinant & the rest
