The Examination of John Barry of Ballygalogha in the Barrony of Barrymore County Corke taken the 9th of September 1652
This Examinent saith that he is The sonn of William Barry husbandman liuing in Ballygalogha and that he seruid the Lord Muskerye for this fiue yeares last past as a priuate Trooper, being demaunded, whe <A> whether he did knowe one leftenant daniell peatly he saith he did not know him, but that about Le March Last he this Examinant with one James Sauaige & Donogh ô Callaghan Teige ô Callaghan Donogh mc Teige, keue Roe ô keue the yonger, dermot ô Boghley & John ô Cromine, all Troopers vnder the Lord Muskeryes Command did meett Elizabeth Allin and an Irish woman & an Irish man and annother man who was an Englishman whos was name he knoweth not, att Botle hill, and that the sayd English man was afterwards killed by the party aforesayd, being demanded why they would kill the sayd Englishman after quarter giuen him, he answerth that he refused to take quarter of which he is not yet well assured but that he so hard it from the rest of the Company, being demaunded where it was if they killed the sayd Englishman he saith itt was done in the place where hee it was taken, beinge demanded demaunded whether he did see the sayd Elizabeth Alline since the same tyme before mentioned he saith that he did see her att Carrikadrayte, being demaunded whether shee did then not aske him if he did knowe her he saith she did but that he did not know her vntill she mayd her selfe knowne vnto him, beinge further demaunded whether he did not not theyr vpon take her the sayd Elizabeth aside out of the Company wherein she then was and asked her whether the man that was then slaine were no t had bine her husband and she answering no, whether he did not then say doe not you then take away my life for for I saued yours or words to that effecte, he denieth it, beinge further demaunded wherfore it was that he should say I am a deade man, when he was apprehended att the faire att Blarnye, he saith he knoweth not whether he saide so or not and further saith not.
