The Examination of John Colethirst of the City of Corke, Taken September 11. 1652.
The said John Colethirst sworne & examined saith that about November 1643 to the best of his remembrance, this examinants father Christopher Colethirst travailing in the barony of Muskery, he was there sett upon about Ballymangan in in the said barony by <A> Owen ô Coningan then neere Cormody Tege oge duffe now of Ballimangan Ballingarr, Donogh mc Owen mc Phelim of Ragrallagh, and one other whose name the examinant now remembreth not: By whom the said Christopher being was taken prisoner, & quarter given him & by the said Owen ô Coningan (as the said Owen told him this examinant yesterday, the 10th instant meeting him at Coolyduffe about 4 miles from Corke:) & as the said Owen then told this examinant, he the said Owen goeing then away about musket shot from the place where the said Christopher then was, he gave the charge of the saide Christopher vnto the saide Tege oge duffe, who did vndertake to keepe him safe, to be caried to the Lo: of Muskery: & that he the said <B> Owen imediatly returning, he found that the said Christopher was murthered by the persons aforesaid. This Examinant farther saith that he was also told by severall others of the Irish that his said fathers eyes were then pluckt out, the rebells saying, you English dogg can you now se Irish mans cowes & be a guide for English rogues! And farther saith not.
