John Gerrald of Corke merchante aged thirty five yeares or thereabouts deposeth as followeth the 1o of December 1652
That aboute the 15th of Aprill, & as hee taketh it that about Nyne or tenn of the Clocke in the morneinge <A> and in the yeare 1644 the party of Cahirdowgane was surprised by some of the Irish party, and one Dermod รด Brother was killed by onePhelim one of the Irish party vppon the drawe bridge neere the Castle, about the tyme that the Castle was surprised, hee saieth that about halfe an howre after hee saw Mr Redmond Roch Redmond Dannan John Roch of Ballynamony & his sonne Morris Roch with seuerall other Gentlemen of the Coutrey come into the Castle of Cahirdowgan And after his the saide Redmond Roch his comeinge into the said Castle; hee comaunded this Examinant to bee boulted, and afterwards beeinge accordingly boulted in Irons was soe kepte about a moneth & three dayes in a Dungeon by the saide <B> Redmond Roch his order, And when Castlehaven came to Moyallowe, hee this Examinate by intercession of some of his ffreinds to the sayde Redmond Roch, was by the said Redmond sente for to Moyallowe, and beeinge brought thither was kept pinnackled vntill his Ransome was paid, vnto the said Redmond Roch beeinge Twelue pownds, And hee saieth that hee verily beleeueth that the saide Redmond Roch was Cheife that Comaunded the party that surprised the sayde Castle of Cahir dowgan, his reasone is that the said Redmond vppon his comeinge into the Castle after the surprisall Comaunded this Examinant to bee putt in boults and kept the possession of the said Castle, &c. Hee this Examinant further saieth that hee beeinge lately in discourse with the sayde Redmond Roch the said Redmond spake in words to this purpose that hee had then greate reasone to gaine the possession of the said Castle to
