The examination of Patrick Darcie of Galway Esquire taken before Sir Robert Meredith knight Colonel William Edwards: Collonel Herbert, Collonel Kempson & Thomas Richardson Esquire members of the high Court of Justice the xxth of december 1653
Saith that Captaine Clarke comeing to Galway in March 1641 with a shipp (burden 200 tun or thereabouts) the said shipp was <A> surprised as he hath heard, by Stephen Linch Brian Row & others, but who more he knoweth not, saveing one Lawrence kirowan (nicknamed Balrock, he hath heard was one of those that surprised the said shipp, and killd some men aboard, And saith that he himself was then liveing in Galway, & was sick in his owne howse where he contynued but till about Ester following, and then left the towne & went to Live vnder the Erle of Clanrickard vnto whom he bemoaned the takeing of the said shipp & murthering of the men found therein. And further saith that he heard that some Ordinance were taken out of the said shipp, & sawe them drawn throughe the towne & one of them planted vpon the towne wall, And saith he beleeveth the rest were drawne near, and ymplojed against the ffort, or for defence of the towne (as hee hath heard, And that about half a dozen ferkins of powder were taken out of the said shipp, but by whome or how implojed he knoweth not, Saith that he knoweth not of any shipp brought into the harbour of Galway by one Thomas Linch or one Kirowan his factor, or Agent, Or that one Turner was Comitted by the Assembly at in Galway for offering to make seisure of the said Linches shipp or any Amunition therein, but hath heard, that Captain Clark was Comitted by the Assembly & released againe, And saith that he himselfe was not at that Assembly nor then in Galway, nor did heare that any of that Assembly said It was treason in any person to seaze any amunition brought in the said Thomas Linches shipp being brought in for the kings service, And further saith that he was in the towne of Galway when the Ô fflaherties of Eereconnaght came

came into the towne, & when one ffox and others were murthered, but by whom he knoweth not, hee then liveing privately in his owne howse; ffor which murther some many the actors have <C> been since executed at Gallway 1643, And saith he beleeveth the gates of Galway w eere set open to lett in the said O fflaherties, & that they were entertained to beseege the fort of Galway, but saith he was not in the Assembly, or of Councell in any such action, And further saith that the said Ô fflaherties were putt out of the towne by the endeavors of Thomas Linch Esquire then Recorder of Galway since deceased, & this Examinant & others, And saith that it was in Ester weeke next after the rebellion to his best remembrance: And further saith that his owne coming to Galway was in ffebr 1641, & that he contynued there till about Ester 1642; In all which time he was not present in any Assembly or Councell in Galway to his best remembrance, And is certeine that he was never in any Assembly or Councell tending to warr, till the generall Assembly at Kilkenny 1642
