The Examination of John Mackdonnell of Lecale being aged about thirty foure yeeres taken the 7th May 1653
Who being sworne sayeth that in the second yeare of the Rebellion he was in Ardglasse and on a Sabbath day in the morning being lying in his bed the Drummer of that company of Sir Ja: Montgomeries Regiment whereof Capt Wooll was then lieutenant came unto this Examinats house, and asked a loane of his foulling peece, This Exami<A>nat desyred to know what he would doe with itt, The sayd Drummer (whose name is Dunbare) replyed, that he had some use for itt, but knowing by this examinats further answer that it was roosty and not fixed he went out agayne [ ] without it This Examinat further sayth, that about half an houre after the sayd Drummer went out, he this Examinat heard a cry in the street, and as he was rysing to putt on his cloathes Thomas Rister one of the four men whoe as this examinat after heard) was killed there came into this Examinats house, hauing a [ ] wounde in his neck from which the blood did spring apace, That the sayd Rister sayd to this Examinat, that the soldiers were about to kill him, and desyred therefore this Examinat to goe to lieut Woll, to cause hinder the soldiers in that action; That this Examinat sayd he knew not what good his speaking could doe, yett begane to putt on his cloathes, and being come abroad he found that four men were killed whose names as this Examinat remembers were: Thomas Rister Patr: Mc lenan Richard Mc Dyen and Patr Mc Eley; But by whom they were killed he this examinat knoweth not, But he sayeth that the report was, that Edward Jackson and will Hamilton were the killers of them; and lykewayes that the report was amongst the soldiers that Lieut: wool gaue order for the killing of the foresayd foure men And further he sayeth not
