The Examination of Mistrisse Anne Fitzsymons being aged about fauty foure years taken the 6th of June 1653
Who being dewly sworne sayeth that about eight yeeres agoe when some of the Scotts Regiments were quartred in lecale, Capten <A> Alexander Adaire who was one of the Captaines in Collonell John Hamiltons Regiment had his company quartered in the toune of Kilkleet, where this examinat hath her dwelling, and then also had, That the sayd Alexander Adaire, did often resort to this examinats houses and by reason of his companye being quartered in the sayd towne, That this examinant heard the sayd Capten Adaire say That the first blood thar euer helped of the Irish was by the killing of a young Child somewhere of without th e in Iland Mackgee but hard by itt And that it was by occasion occasion of an Irish woman her flying away from him, and he following and stricking att the woman his strocke light upon the child who was on the womans [ ] back and the head of itt hanging ouer the breachen That his blowe did cause the head of the child fall to the ground lyke a ball
And this examinant ffurther sayeth that oftentymes the sayd Capten Adayre did speak of his killing of the sayd child, [ ] upon occasion of his looking upon a young child of this examinats, who the sayd <B> Alex Adayre used to say was very lyke and of the same age vnto the child which he killed as aforesayd And that he was putt in mynd of the sayd Act by looking upon this Examinants child And this Examinat further sayeth that she heard the sayd Alexander Adayre say that the same day on which he killed the child as foresayd in the Morning he and many others fell on the Irish and killed away threescore of them [ ] without euer shotting a shott But that their swords went lyke flaills: And that within three nights after they also went out (it being a uery dark and rainye night) and killed thirtye families and suffered not them that were in this bed (poynting att the beds by him) to giue warning to them that were in that bed And further she sayeth not But that when the sayd Adaire was commending the seruice of killing the foresayd persons, this Examinant sayd unto him that it might come to passe, that she would ryse up in Judgment against him for itt
