The Examination of Charles Toole, servant vnto Mr Richard Golborne, taken the xxith daie of March 1641. Before mee Chancelour of his Maiesties Court of Exchequer, By direction of the right honnorable the Lordes Justices & Councell.
Whoe beeing sworne & Examined saith, that hee this Examinant was in the Companie of the Rebells, & vnder the Comand of Collonell Sutton, when the saide Sutton came to take possessions of the Castle of Leslipp. Att which tyme hee heard a Message delivered vnto the said Rebells, from the Servants of Sir Nicholas White knight, the substance whereof was, that they the Servants of the said Sir Nicholas would shoote att them the said Rebells, onelie to make show that the Castle of Leslipp aforesaid, was not deliuered willinglie into theire handes, and by that meanes theire said Master & Ladie might bee free from blame; But withall told them the said Rebells, that they would bee sure not to hurt any of them by theire soe shooting. And this Examinant saith that accordinglie hee sau saw the said servants of the said Sir Nicholas Whites (entrusted with the Castle aforesaid) after makeing some shot to noe purpose, (whereas they might haue killed a hundred of them if they had soe pleased) deliuer vpp the said Castle vnto them the said Rebells, noe man beeing hurt of eyther partie.) And further saith that Sir John Dungan knight imployes a servant of his frequently

vnto the Cyttie of Dublin, by name one Brimingham who vpon his returne thence, constantlie resorts with intelligence vnto the said Rebells, And enformes them with what hee obserues & heares there. But whether hee doth the same by direction or privitie of his said Master or noe hee this Examinant knoweth not.
