The Examinacion of James Eustace of Borchole taken as af the day and yeare aforesaid
<r> Who being examined & sworne to so much as concerneth others confesseth that he was in the Castle of Clongowes wood at the late assault giuen upon it by the English army and that he had beene there euer since candlemas last and that the occasion of his comming thither was to waite upon a gentlewoman called mrs Jane Eustace alias Birmingham who being at Castleiordan desired letters of commendation from Sir John Gifford to Sir Charles Coote at Dublin whether she intended to haue gone but comming downe to Clongowes wood she found the country so full of the irish and fearing howe the Irish with would haue dealt with her if they should finde the letter of Sir John Giffords about her she altered her minde and went to her owne house at parsonstowne in the County of Kildare, and so the examinate betooke himselfe to continued at Clongowes wood, He further saieth that <s> the men which made use of the muskets and peices w that were in the house were the two barnewalls Richard Eustace the Examinate made one shot Thomas ffitzgerald Peirce Nugent Thomas Holliwood, he likewise sawe a musket with Daniell Murphy the preist and Richard Greames but howe the other muskets and peices were disposed he doth can not nowe call to rememberance and but euery one that was in the Castle did his endeauour did to defende the Castle in some kinde or other except old Sherlock the preist who lay bedridden & some litle children And in all other thinges the examinate agreeth with Thomas fitzgerald and Richard Eustace.
