The Examination of Luke Kinsalagh (sonne to Dorothie Reinolds) late of Ballihagan now of the Graige in the County of Kilkeny gent aged 28 years of therabouts taken the 20th day of August 1652
The said Luke sworne & examined saith, that he lived att Ballyhagan in the beginning of the Rebellion, wher he continued since his birth till about a twelmonth since he remooved to the towne of Graige:
Being demaunded what English protestants he knew lyv{ed} in the Graige vpon the first breaking out of the Rebellion, he saith that he did know John George & William Stone sonnes to the said John Margarett wife to the said John & Katheryne & Barbara his daughters, with others whose names he now remembreth not;
Being demannded what became of John Stone and the <A> rest of the English then inhabiting in Graige, he saith that he heard, that about the beginning of May 1642 Dermott Doghen, Garratt fforestall, Gibbon fforestall with others of James Butler of Tinihinich his servants & followers came vnto the towne of Graige a foresaid and then & ther seise{d} vpon the bodies of the said John & other E{nglish} and carried them towards the Ross, and {that} { } (as he heard) the 2 daughters of Jo{hn} { } sonne in law of the said Johns and { } whose name he knoweth not were { } Garratt Kavanogh a piper & the { } carried them away: and that the { } nere Polmonto: Being d{emanded} { } conceived to b{y} {re}ason {that} { } he { } batte{ } Eng{land} { }

any English protestants to liue amongst them and therfor it was resolved to send then as he found [ ] by the generall report then in the Country, wherevpon this examinant went to Tinihinich wher was then <B> residing Collonell Edmond Butler, Collonell Walter Bagnall & James Butler of Tinihin i ch and desired to haue a proteccion from Co llonell Bagnall being then ioynt Governor with Sir Morgan Kavanogh for the County of Catherlogh told them what was reported in the Country, wherevnto Collonell Bagnall who laughing answered him that there was noe such thing intended & that he needed fere not fear; wherevpon Dermott Doghen & Garratt fforestall did in the presence of Collonell Bagnall Collonell Butler & their wiues James Butler & others aver and say that if all protestants should be protected & stay in the Countrey ther was one (naminge William Stone that the whole Country woould be the worse for, saying affirming that the said William Stone did say in thier presence being drinking together that he did expect the Irish in this presence being drinking together that he did expect the Irish rogues throats to be cutt within a short tyme & that he would be a good tyme guid vnto them English whervpon Collonell Bagnall demanded if that were true, & the said Doghny & Garrald fforestall deposed the same: which this deponent hearing went to giue notice thereof to John Stone the same Williams ffather and wished him to send him out of the way lest some mischiefe might befall him:

by whose order he was executed, he saith of his certayn knowledge he cannot sett forth, but he heard one Elizabeth fferall of Graige widdow say that it was by Collonell Bagnalls order, and of by <D> the instigacion of Ellen Butler then servant to James Butler aforenamed and
Being further demannded what he knowes or can say concerning the death of Walter Sherlow & Joseph Valentine he saith he knoweth nothing
Being asked if he knew William Lilly, he saith he did know him that he liued in Donleckny & was a smith by profession being asked what became of him, he saith that he heard that after the Battle of Ross he was taken & hanged hard by Tinihinich, but by whose orders he knoweth not, and further he cannot depose
