The examinacion of Jane Browne alias Barnwell of Cratenstowne in the County of Meath widdow Aged ffower & fforty yeares or thereabouts beinge duely sworne sayeth.
That about the third daye of December 1649 John Browne then living in ffarmwell in the County of <A> Meath vnder the proteccion of the Garrison of Trym & payinge & paid contribucion to the same Gareson, came from thence to Carbree in the County of Kildare to vissitt this deponent being his mother & his sisters who then lived there, in which towne of Carbree was is [ ] Castle called Castle Carbree then a Garrison of the [ ] Irish party com vnder the comand of the Lord of Ormond comanded then by one Captaine Dudley Cooly Governor thereof, and att his cominge there he the said John Browne was taken prisoner by a Sergeant called Georg Houldcroft & some foot souldiers by the comand of Ensigne Houldcroft then Governor in the said Coolyes abse { nce } was therevpon carried to the said Garrison, & there was deteyned prisoner for about the space of ten dayes, att which tyme came the said Captain Coolye home from Kilkenny and the next morninge gaue orders to the Souldiers to shoot to death the said John Browne without either callinge a Counsell of warr or examininge the said John Browne, though much importuned therevnto by the s a said John Browne & this deponent, which orders was fort- <B> with putt in Execucion, & the said John Browne was putt shott to death vpon the thirtenth daye of December aforesaid in the p by the Comand said Capt Cooly souldiers & by the comand of the said Capt Cooly in the hearing of this Deponent. And this deponent further sayeth that the cause of the said Capt Coolys comand as aforesaid (as the said Coolys pretended) was, that he the said Browne was a spye & came there to betraye the said Garison to Capt Pakenham A Captaine in the service
