<January 27th 1652> The Examinacion of Walter Cusack gent of the Dangan of the County of Eastmeath gentleman of the age aboute two or three and thirty yeares beinge duely sworne and Examined sayth
That at about the beginninge of the Rebellion and euer since he has lived at the Dangan aforesayd. And further sayth that [ ] in about the beginning of July 1651 That one John Elliott of then of Mountaine in the County of Meath & others of his Neighbours standinge (as this deponent was truely informed) in the high way betweene Sklanduffe and Danistowne did meete Patrick Cusack this deponants brother, with other of his neighbours, all protected, and vnarmed people, and the sayd Patrick with the rest of his Company did civelly salut the sayd Ellio t in his passinge by him, and imediately after the sayd Eliott Turned back his horse and drew forth his pistoll, and therewith shott the sayd Patrick Cusack, who lived but two dayes after the sayd shott, and being then carryed to a neighbours to Sclanduff, died there of the sayd wounds. This deponent hearinge of the sayd murthering of his brother, being at his howse about 8 miles, from the sayd place, repaired speedily to Trim, and there acquainted Major Caduggan and Capten James Peisley with the said Murther, who presently gaue order to Cornett Brian Hearne with 12 horse to goe forth for the apprehendinge of the sayd John Elliott, but he flying vpon the sayd Murther made his escape into the North, whence he did remaine till now of Late, and Lately comminge to his former habitacion was by the high Constable of the sayd place apprehended for the sayd Murther and further sayth not
