The Examinacion of William Penrust of Eniscorthy yeoman aged fiftie yeares or thereabouts, taken vpon oath on the behalfe of the Comonwealth, Concerning, Joseph fferrall sometime of CarrigBrisse & since of Eniscorthy in the County of wexford gent deceased.
<To the 1st Inter:> The Examinant Deposeth that hee well knew the said Joseph, for that he dwelt partely at Eniscorthy sometime of the rebellyon <k> (where this deponents residence was and is), from whence he the said Joseph did not remooue into the english quarters, as the english and protestants (his neighbours did,
<To the 2d:> Hee Cannot depose
<To the 3d & 4th> The Deponent saith That the said Joseph did contribute his person, and endeauors toward the forwarding the said <l> Rebellyon in the first beginning thereof: and was with Peirce Buttler of Clough esquire, about Christmas 1641
<& the whitsontide after> at which time the said Peirce, with the said Joseph & diuers others in Armes in his Company did betray the Castle of Eniscorthy out of the possession of walter Lacy & seauerall english therein, who kept the same for the proprietor thereof Sir Henry wallopp knight And that the said Joseph Peirce Buttler was entertained & harboured at the said Josephs howse before, at, and after the betraying of the said Castle, in which action the deponent is confident the said Joseph had an hand, for that he was zealous for the Catholique Cause and a great familiar to the said Peirce Buttler, & very intimate with him.
<To the 5th interr> The Deponent saith that the said Joseph was and this deponent hath seene him at seauerall publicque meetings of the Irish <m> held at Eniscorthy by the Irish in the first yeare of the rebellyon & since in order to promote the said rebellyon against the english

<To the 10th> The deponent saith that the said Joseph dyed about the yeare 1646 Leauing behinde him his eldest sonne and heire Danyell fferrall: which said Danyell this deponent did see to march in Armes with the Irish towardes Duncannon forte, when the same was beseiged by the Irish in the first yeare of the said rebellyon) and further saith that the said Danyell after the Ld generall Cromwells accesse to the County of wexford & did liue at Eniscorthy vnder his excellencyes protection, as this deponent and others did, and afterwardes about three ten dayes before Christmas 164 9 1649: the said Danyell with others that he had drawne to his confederacy Conspired the <n> betraying of and did betray the castle of Eniscorthy then g[ ] and killed cruelly murthered Capt: Todd then gouernor thereof and with his Company gaurrissoned therein, and in ostentacion of his wickednes did the next day after the said Murther weare the cloathes of the said Capt Todd and did Continue in the possession of the said Castle as gouernor thereof from Christmas aforesaid till Candlemas following at which time he surrendered the same vpon condicions to Coll Cooke And afterwards he the said Danyell was made a Captayne in Collonel Danyell Cauanaghs Regiment for that exploit and in that Capacity went to Spaine with the said Collonel Cavanagh: The deponents cause of knowledge is for that the deponent was an Inhabitant in Eniscorthy at the time it the said Castle was betrayed & Capt Todd murthered in manner aforesaid and did see the said Danyell weare Capt Todds clo apparrell, and did know the said Danyell to haue the sole Comand of the said Castle till it was yeilded as aforesaid and further saith not.
