The Examination of Sergeant Josias Nanc{e} of Clonmell in the Co: of Tiperary taken the 17th of November 1652
The said Josias Nance being sworne & examined saith that at the begining of the rebellion Captain Fennell (now<A> Collonell Fenell) commannded in chiefe a party of the Rebells against Caperquin in the Co: of waterford: when & where he the said Fennell commannded on Captain Sherlock with a party to enter the said Towne, which the said Sherlock did accordingly, by which party there were then & there murdered nine women & children in the house of Henry Nance the Examinants father, he the Examinant being [ ] present in the roome where they were So murdered, but knoweth not the persons, who did actually committ the said murder did actually murder the said persons they being all strangers to him & that he the Examinant then escaped he creepeing vpon vnder a bed whereby he was not discovered And further saith that the said Captain Sherlock was then slaine in the saide Towne & his body exchanged by the said Fenell as this Examinant heard And further saith not
