The Examination of Richard Ely of Clonmell merchant adged forty six yeares or thereabouts, taken before me the 17th of November 1652.
1. Who being duely sworne and examined sayeth that he was in the Castle of Cullen when the same was first beseiged by a party of the Irish. And that the sayd party was commaunded in cheife by the Lord of <A> Castleconnell, Collonel Pierce Waylsh of the abey of Owny, Many Bryen Arra, & John Kenedy of Dwally Esquires, and that alsoe dureing the said seige this Examinant did obserue, that fower men liued in a house neare the said Castle, whereof two were English men & two Irish men, and that upon the assault of some of the said party on the said house the said fower men were taken, And at that time were alsoe taken thirty & fiue horses or thereabouts, and that the said two English men whose names were Thomas Parsawall, seruant to one mr Whittby & one John Shepheard were hanged, & the two Irishmen with seauen more of the Irish then taken were sett at lyberty. And further sayth that one of the said two Irishmen is now prisoner in the Towne of Clonmell by name Mortagh ô Haghierin who as this Examinant conceiueth can giue a full account of the whole passage, And that the said Irish seige was about January 1641 & that Sir John Browne comeing <B> to rayse the same the said party fledd. But that about the middle of March next following there came another party to beseige the said Castle who were commaunded by William Bourke Esquire of Pollardstowne, Derby Ryan of Sallahod Esquires & Therlagh & mc Bryen of Cuonagh alias Castletowne who continued their seige untill about Agust next following dureing which seige, a party of men, woemen & children went to the fields to gether corne for the reliefe of the said Castle & that the said party leying in ambush at fower seuerall places came with swords &

& skeines & kild thirty and fower men woemen & children & this Examinant saw the dead Corpes & heard that seauenteene were wounded but who acted the said murther in particular this Examinant knoweth not And further said that dureing the said seige a little boy sent out of the Castle for tabaco was (as this examinant heard) murthered. And that one Ann Whitby was shott into the Castle windowe And that when one Captaine Whitney Bridgess in June then next following came to relieue the Castle with powder, seuerall persons in the said Castle endeauoring to escape & ease the castle of the number of forty men. they were Kyld <E> as this deponent heard, by a party commaunded by the Lord of Castleconnell (as alsoe this deponent heard.) And further can not depose.

2. Thomas Browne of Yeoghall adged thirty six yeares of adge or thereabouts duely sworne & examined doth agree with & know the aboue examination & the particulars thereof to be true & further that this Examinant <f> was one of the party who went out to [ ] engadge the enemy who murthered the aboue mencioned men woemen & children, And that he saw there the undernamed persons Vizt Daniell Roe who sithence was hanged, John ô Heine, Mortagh ô Hagieren & Mathew Hiffernan all now prisoners at Clonmell. & further can not remember.

3. Valentine Palmer of Cullen adged 38 yeares or thereabouts doth in all pointes agree with the first Examinant & knoweth what is in he deposeth to be true but further can not remember.

4. William Wiggmore adged 60 yeares or thereabouts duely sworne & examined sayth that what is in the first deposition is true and further at present can not remember.

5. William Hamm of Cullen adged 30 yeares or thereabouts duely sworne & examined sayth doth likewise in all pointes agree with the first Examinant & further can not at present remember.
