The Examination of William Groue Esquire aged 65 yeares by beeinge duly sworne & Examyned before vs the 1o of December 1652
Whoe sayth that one or aboute the 15th of Aprill <A> 1644 or thereabouts Early in the Morneing Redmond Roch of Ballyhendon in the County of Corke Esquire with others his assistants came to Cahir dowgan in the Barony of ffermoye and County of Corke and there they privatly haveinge placed themselves him were in Ambush in a howse neere the Castle, where about Eighte of the Clocke in the Morneinge, they tooke this Examinant goeing abroade./ and aboute the same tyme some of men beeing placed neere the Castle, rushed in and surprised the same, And att the tyme of the surprisall of the saide Castle there was killed by onePhelim a protestante one Dermod ô Brother a protestante & one of the Examinats servants, And hee saieth that hee doth not knowe of any of the Irish Army there but only the Gentlemen of the Contrey and theire adherents. And that the sayde Redmond Roch John Roch of Ballynamony & his sonne Redm Morris Roch: Redmond Dannan of Dannanstowne weare of the party And hee Conceiveth that the said Redmond Roch was Cheife in regarde hee was the prime Gentlman there & pretended right to the possession of the Castle and kept it afterwards a longe tyme And this Examinate further saieth that hee never hearde that the said Phelim that Comitted the Murther was ever questioned for it but Goeth still in Castletowne, & hee saieth that att the instante of the surprisall the said Castle Dermod ô Brother was shott deade (by the said Phelim whoe was one of the Irish one party) on the bridge neere the saide Castle
