The Examination of Mr John Browne aged 36 yeers sworne & examined saith
Saith that in the first yeare of the warre, he was with a party of men from Bandon bridge comming from ward the mountain Castle and had some Cattle with them which they were driving from to Bandon Bridge, and as they come a long, some of Sir Roger O Shahans men, that were on horse backe, come vpon the way following them, & this Examinant talked with them, and did not accompt them enemyes, as the rest of the Irish nacion, by reason that Sir Roger O Shahan & his men were in proteccion, vnder the Lord of Inchiquin & there had pasted betweene them & the english, no Acts of Hostility And this Examinant saith that on a sudden they seized vpon one John Phips, and then drew out their swords or skeines but this Examinant Escaped haueing a good mare horse vnder him, And this Examinant saith that he heard since often times, that the the said Phips was hangd at Knock o cullen & farther remembreth not.
