John Newenham of the Cittie of [ ] Limerick gent sworne & examined deposeth and saith That about the begining of March one thowsand six hundred fortie one hee this deponent (amongst divers others of the English) was besieged in M[ ] in Croome Castle belonging to Mr Edmund Perry gen within the County of Limerick when & where two of the said Mr Perryes servants whereof one was an Englishman named James Pye & the other was a Scottish man (by trade a Mason) whose name the deponent cannott nowe remember) goeing out of the same Castle to fetch in some hay & wood were suddenly surprised by an Ambush of Irish Rebells which lay neare the Castle, Of which this deponent is verily perswaded one <A> Edmund Hickye of Tourine a near neighbor was one & was on horsback, which horse this deponent very sawe & beleeveth & soe hath credibly heard that the said Edmund Hickie was then on his backe And saith that those Rebells in this deponents sight carried the said James Pye & the Scottish man away with them to a very his the said Hickies towne & dwelling And afterwardes as this deponent hath heard from divers of the Irish & verely beleev{eth} their report therein to be true that those Rebells that tooke him carried them the said James Pye & the Scotchm{an} from the said Hickies Towne to the towne of Killmallo{ck} & there putt them both to death which this deponent he rath{er} beleeveth for that the said Pye & the Scotchman be Whoe were taken away in his this deponents sight as aforesaid were never after that tyme t hen seen alive, but were then certenly putt to death And further saith that afterwardes vizt on May day 1642 the said Castle being beseeged by a partie of Irish Rebells comanded by one whose Chrissen name as this deponent verely thincketh was William Leo of Dullough <B> a near neighbour to Croome Castle aforesaid some of those Rebells beseegers whose names he knows not shott & kill{ed}

out of a Muskett or fowling peece, in the Midds of the back a Mayde servant of his the said Mr Edmund Perrys in his garden vnder the said Castle walle And the said Maide servant came soe shott to him this deponent & the rest in the said Castle & bledd so much both inwardly & outwardly that within fowre or five dayes after shee of that shott died And this deponent & the rest of the beseeged buried her vnder the Castle walle secretly when the beseegers saw them not
