Examination of Mary Farrell and Joane Barry

The depositions of Mary farrell, & Joane Barry taken at Boile the 7th of May 1653
Mary ffarrell wife to James ffarrell of the Boyle, being she being thirty yeares of age, doth depose that about the month of July 1642 there came severall Rebells of the Irish & entered the house at the Boyle where this examinant & her mother Sara Nicholson Liued, & falling vpon her said Mother with weapons, gaue her 17. or 18. wounds, where one Hugh Mc Rory Grane Mc Donnogh (being at the same instant nee <neere> the house when the Murther was Committed) seeing the said Mary stript & a fellow ready with a skeane to kill her, tooke her by the hand, & led her out of the crowde, which as she conceaues was occasioned by her mother, whoe in her dyeing said to the said Hugh Mc Rory Grane, that if hee should doe any hurt to her daughter Mary she had friends would be revenged of him, this deponent being present there, & heard what she hath deposed.
Alsoe the said Mary doth depose that one owen ô Dunnure of the Boyle, whoe was allsoe murthered that night, said as he was in point of death by reason of those wounds he receaued, that Edmond Bane o Connellan was the man that Killed him & when the said owen tould Edmond Bane that he was his Kinsman, the said Edmond replyed, that he would lett out his gutts for liueing with the English, & immediatly ript the said Owen’s belly with his skean, whoe presently thereupon dyed. the cause of her knowlege is that the said owen ô Dunnure made this relation vnto her about 3 houres before he died in such manner as is before declared.
Joane Barry, wife to Edmond Barry of the Boyle, she being about 40 yeares of age, doth depose that the said Edmond Bane ô Connellan was in Company with those men that Committed the said Murther that night at the Boyle, & shee hearde that hee brought away seuerall things that he then pilliged in the Boyle. And further saith that seuerall of those Irish Rebells that Came to the Boyle that night did vow & sweare bitterly, that man, woman, nor childe, should escape (that fell into theire hands that night) from killing, this deponent heard, & hath seen what shee hath deposed, The said Mary
The aforesaid Mary ffarrell doth likewise say that there was about sixteen persons murthered that night in the Boyle.

<D> The within written Joane Barry further deposeth that William ô Connellane whome shee mett the next morning neare Ballinafad did confesse to her that the said William Connellan did with his owen hands kill Ensigne Nicholson her father, & then wore his shooes, but it proued vppon further enquirie to haue bin Lawrence Holder, whome he then Murthered at the same time & place. which william Connellan is not nowe in the Country
