Oliver Joenes Esquire
The examinatione of Oliver Joens Esquire concerning the
Being duely examined & sworne sayth that one John stibbes ane Englishman, & a protestant, & one George Dillon were put to death at Athlone about in Connaught syde, for Keeping as hee sayth corrspondence with the English, that the Lord Dillon was th e r Governour of the towne when stibbe{s} was committed, but went away to Galway that day: that all hee heard was Layd to the Charge of the sayd stibbes was the wryting of a letter to some of the English party neere <A> Ballymore, That hee heard the discovery was made by James Dalton of Mullinmeachan, & Major David shorne, who as hee heard, opened the letter before hee [ ] it was brought unto the sayd Stibbes, & sealed it uppe againe, & as the messenger was returning with ane answere they opened the letter & tooke a Coppyes of it & when seemingly sending the messenger away caused him to bee apprehended at & sent to Athlone, & sayth hee heard the messengers name was mc Nisky or margilly criny & that ffor his good service in that buissinesse hee had, ten or twelve powndes given him by t which was raysed from the toowne but by whose orders hee Knoweth not, but sayth that Terence Coghlean Knowes how the matter was for hee was directed to see the order put in executione. And ffurther sayth that hee heard severall persons say that the Lord Dillons Lady should say, shee would neither eate nor drinke till stibbes were put to death.
And as for dillon hee sayth that hee knew nor heard of Nothing for which hee was put to death, but for that the sayd messenger deposed, that the sayd George dillon was by when the sayd stibbes delivered the answere of the say d letter to the sayd messenger, & that Dillon bid the messenger have a speciall care of it, & if yow doe yow shalbee made a man; And further sayth that the Lord Dillon tol (this examinate being upon bondes, for being privy to the sayd stibbes receaving of the letter & not discovering it) being told how matters had passed in his absence, & that stibbes & dillon were
