The Examinacion of Ferrah Kelly of Skreine in the Baronie of Athlone in the County of Roscommon taken before mee Samuel Nichols one of the Commissioners for the Administracion of Justice for the Precinct of Galway on the 2 of May 1653.
This Examinant being deposed saith about the middle of December in the yeare 1651 going to Athlone with forrage & contribucion to the Garrison hee being in company with about twenty persons. They met with some Toryes <C> to the number of forty whom assoone as Hugh Kelly one of the persons in companie with this Deponent saw, hee the said Hugh Kelly advised this Deponent with the rest of his companie to take up stones, & defend themselues & their carriages against the said Toryes in case they should make an Assault upon them, & hee the said Hugh Kelly going before the rest of his company with his Pistoll in his hand demaunded of the said Toryes who they were, who replying asked him what hee was, who answered that hee was an Irish man as. they were. The Toryes then bid him stand, but hee the said Hugh Kelly turning backe towards the rest of his companie was immediately shot in the shoulder by one

of the Toryes whose name this Deponent knoweth not, but saith that it was not Connor mc Keoge, but this <D> Deponent further saith that hee heard in the Country that the said Connor mc Keoge commanded that party of Toryes which assaulted the said Kelly And further saith not.

<f> Donnoh mc Kyrly being deposed at the same time agreeth with the former deponents & further saith that hee never saw to his knowledge nor knew Connor mc Keoge neither can hee say that hee Killed Hugh Kelly, or but that hee heard that the said Connor mc Keoge commanded the party that killed the said Hugh Kelly. & further saith not.
