The Examinacion of Donell Mc Gilduff of Ballough in the Baronie of Athlone taken before mee Samuel Nichols one of the Commissioners for the Administracion of Justice for the Precinct of Gallway on the 2 of May 1653.
This Examinant being deposed saith, that about the middle of December in the yeare [ ] 1651. going from Ballough to Athlone to carry contribution & forrage to the Garrison, hee being in companie with Hugh Kelly of Skreine in the Barony of Athlone in the County of Roscommon, with about twenty persons more, They met with about thirty Toryes who made an Assault upon them, & amongst the rest shot & Killed the said Hugh Kelly as hee was endeavoring to make an escape. After which, Connor mc Keoge one of the said Toryes (who at the time when the said Hugh Kelly was shot was about a Musket shot from him) comming up to this Examinant, This Examinant said, They should dearly repent the Killing of that Gentleman The said Connor mc Keoge then asking this Examinant what Gentleman it was that was Killed, This Examinant told him, it was Hugh Kelly of Skreine, Which when the said Connor mc Keoge heard, hee clapping his hand upon his side seemed to express much sorrow, & thereupon immediately went away After whose departure some of the said Toryes pillaged the said Hugh Kelly, & tooke from him his cloake sword & Pistoll (which said Pistoll the said Hugh Kelly had in his hand at the time when hee was shot) togeather with what mony they found in his Pocket which when they had done they immediately went away without
