The Deposition of Thomas Jans b e eing one now resident in Sligo taken before mee the 16th of May 1653 as followeth
The examinant beeing sworne on the holy Evangelist sayth that hee was in Mr William Croftons house from the first of the rebellion, vntill the tyme of the surrendry of the <A> same which was about some tenn weekes time beeing demanded who itt was that besiedged them sayth, that itt was Captain John Crean, of Sligo, Captain Bryan mcDonogh of Coloony Captain Hugh mcShane glass mcDonogh of Kese Corren Captain Patricke Plunckett of Ragrane and Captain Bryan O Hara sonne to Cormocke o Hara of Leyny that (together with theire severall companies) besiedged Temple house; beeing further examined whither they had any quarter giuen them or no hee the said Examinant sayth that they had Capitulated, and artickled for theire marching away with theire liues, bagg and baggadge vnto the Abbey of Boyle which artickles were subscribed by the formentioned officers which notwithstanding they immediately broke in every particular by stripping the whole persons that had Capitulated and murthering Mr Oliphant, whome they draggd after a horse tayle, and likewise of an old woman, whose name hee knoweth not, and a child which they buried aliue where mr Oliphant was buried, and beeing demaunded whose child it was the said Examinant sayth hee knoweth not, And the said Examinant beeing further demanded whither hee Knew any there to bee more vigourous or and actiue then other in Committing of <B> those Murthers, or plundering sayth, that hee tooke notic notice of Hugh mcShane glass mcDonogh, as one of the most forwardest in the Committal of all those villaneyes, as for the rest and theire Companies they were likewise very busie but the said Deponent, beeing a stranger to them and haueing Come into the Contry but about three weekes before the rebellion nor never beene in the Contry before hee Could not distinguish betweene them more then that hee particular{ly} noted the aforesaid Captain Hugh mcDonogh, and this deponent further sayth not
