The Deposition of Helein the wyff of Hector Trimble of Bellimoatt taken at Sligo 16o May 1653
This deponent being sworne on the holy Ewangelists, saith that shee was in Templehous att the begineing of the rebellion, and continued thair dureing ten weekes siege, when at Last Mr William Crofton Esquire master of the hous, was constrained to yeeld the samyn vnto Hugh mcDonogh captain, Brian o Hara Captain, John รด Crean <A> captain, and Robert McConmy gent, and others whom this deponent knowe{th} nott, vpon which surrender this deponent saith that the said Mr William Crofton vpon Capitulation was with his wyff familie and others who wer within the said hous att thatt tyme, with a conwoy to passe to the Boyll, with bagg and baggage; Whervpon the said Mr William Crofton comeing out of the hous, with the forsaid people, they wer imediatly stript and plundered of all that they had by the souldiers of the forsaid Captans, who gawe them way to doe the samyn, and further this deponentt saith that the said Captains, especially John o Crean brought a great deal of the plunder of the said hous with him to the towne of Sligo, which hee conwerted to his owne vse: And further this deponent being examined concerneing the murders committed att that tyme saith that Mr William Oliphant was hanged publickly vpon a maypole befor the gate of the said hous, and (as shee hard) was <B> efterwards dragged att a horse tayle, as also on Margarett Brennaghe was hangd at that tyme and another man who Liwed formerly in Aghonry whoes name this deponent knoweth not; Neither did shee se e any of the officers opposeing of itt, which if they had pleased they might hawe resisted {it} This deponent being further examined who wer the most actiwe person{s} in the Irish camp att that tyme against the said Mr Crofton and his people, shee saith that on Robert McConmy was the most active and that hee rushed in vpon Mr Crofton in his Chamber and with a drawne Skyn threatned him for his lyff, And further this deponentt saith not; bott that shee this deponent saith that shee hard that sewerall persons comeing from Strad in the County of Mayo with a resolution to go towards the province of Vlster, wer murdered by the said Campe, att a place called Rathbane, And that on Neal Murrey o Skanlan was a cheife actor in the committing of the said murder neither was any opposition mad by any souldier or officer in the campe
